A horrifying incident of gender-based violence and illegal confinement has surfaced from Surendranagar district in Gujarat, where a woman and her partner were subjected to brutal torture under the pretext of conducting a purification ritual. The woman, originally married to a resident of Vapi, was allegedly gang-raped, while her partner was tied to a tree and assaulted. The perpetrators documented the entire assault on mobile devices and circulated the clips across social media platforms. Following the circulation of these videos, law enforcement authorities intervened, leading to the apprehension of nine individuals, including the woman's husband and two female relatives.
Marital Discord and Sequences Leading to the Confinement
According to the details emerging from the investigation, the woman had been married to a man based in Vapi. Over time, strain and disputes developed within the marriage, prompting her to leave her husband and relocate to Chotila. She resided in Chotila alongside her partner for a duration of three months. Her family eventually traced her location, brought her back against her wishes, and confined her inside a residence to prevent her from leaving again.
Despite the restrictions imposed by her relatives, she managed to break free from confinement and returned to Chotila to rejoin her partner five days before the incident took place. This prompted an aggressive retaliation from her marital family.
Torture Orchestrated Under the Guise of a Purification Ritual
Upon discovering that his wife had returned to her partner, the husband alerted his relatives. A group of relatives tracked down the couple, intercepted them, and transported them to a residence located in Surendranagar. The assault occurred on October 4, when the accused declared that they were performing a customary purification procedure on the pair.
The victims were subjected to severe beatings with wooden sticks. The male partner was tied to an outdoor tree with ropes to render him defenseless, while the woman was initially locked inside a room. The assailants subsequently assaulted her sexually in the veranda of the house. Compounding the physical brutality, the perpetrators also forced the male victim to consume the woman's urine. The entire ordeal was deliberately recorded using mobile phones and disseminated across social platforms.
Police Intervention and Apprehension of Suspects
The authorities were alerted to the crime only after the recorded footage began circulating on social media networks. A Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) confirmed that immediate measures were initiated to trace the whereabouts of the victims and the culprits involved.
Multiple police squads were mobilized to comb through residential premises across the designated area. During the search operation, officers located the woman inside a house. Overwhelmed by the rescue, she broke down in tears upon seeing the police personnel. Following necessary counseling and medical care, she provided a comprehensive statement detailing the traumatic sequence of events. Based on her testimony and digital evidence, law enforcement officials swiftly arrested nine individuals, including her husband and two women involved in the torture, as formal investigations proceed.
