Senior politician and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief Humayun Kabir has decided to step away from active politics and expressed his desire to resign as the Member of Legislative Assembly from the Nowda constituency. The move comes in the wake of what he described as police harassment and deep humiliation during the Rejinagar by-election voting day in Murshidabad, West Bengal.
The Rejinagar By-Election and 12-Hour Detention
In the 2026 assembly elections, Kabir had secured victories from both the Nowda and Rejinagar seats. Because he subsequently vacated the Rejinagar seat, a by-election became necessary in the constituency. However, on Tuesday, within barely an hour of polling getting underway, police took him into custody right outside the party office in Rejinagar on accusations of breaking the law.
Kabir remained under police detention for approximately 12 hours before finally being released at around 8 PM. Having felt humiliated by the conduct of law enforcement, he formally announced his political decision on Wednesday.
Allegations Against Police Conduct
Following his release, the Nowda legislator voiced strong objections to the grounds for his apprehension. Kabir said,
"I protested. The police spoke lies and forcibly picked me up to keep me in custody for 12 hours."
Aggrieved by the ordeal, Kabir stated his intention to not only resign his current legislative seat in Nowda but also sever ties with mainstream political life entirely.
