Bribe demand to erase a rape case name lands Haryana SHO in ACB net, education department clerk also held

Haryana's Anti Corruption Bureau arrested Punhana SHO Kundan for taking a Rs 50,000 bribe and education department employee Shakir for taking Rs 25,000, both red-handed, in Nuh district on Monday. The inspector had been demanding Rs 1 lakh to remove a name from a rape case.

Haryana's Anti Corruption Bureau carried out two separate stings within hours of each other in Nuh district on Monday, catching a police station in-charge and an education department employee taking bribes on the same day. In the first case, Punhana city police station in-charge was caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 50,000, while in the second, an employee of the district education department office was trapped taking Rs 25,000.

A bribe to erase a name from a rape case

Acting on a tip-off, the bureau learnt that Punhana SHO Kundan was demanding Rs 1 lakh to remove an accused's name from a rape case. A trap was laid, and the moment Kundan accepted Rs 50,000 in cash, the team closed in. Sensing he had been caught, the inspector tried to flee, but the ACB team overpowered and arrested him. He is currently being questioned as the bureau digs deeper into the case. The arrest of a serving SHO has sent shockwaves through the police department.

This double sting by the anti-corruption agency in a single day exposes the deep-rooted corruption within local governance and law enforcement in Nuh. A police officer bargaining to clear a rape suspect directly undermines the criminal justice system and public safety. Beyond the immediate arrests, the core challenge ahead lies in investigating whether this nexus extends higher up the administrative chain.

Extending this analytical perspective, it is crucial to underline that such brazen bargaining by a police station in-charge to remove names in heinous crimes exposes the total failure of the department's internal monitoring mechanism. When guardians of the law themselves start trading favors to shield culprits, a victim's faith in the justice delivery system naturally shatters. Following this twin operation, it becomes imperative for the anti-corruption bureau to thoroughly investigate who else locally is part of such a syndicate to ensure strict accountability within the administrative machinery.
