Jind: To curb social evils and restore traditional discipline within the community, a major mahapanchayat of the Naugama Khap was convened in Jind. The grand meeting took place on the platform in Ramrai village, drawing representatives and members of all communities from 21 villages. Several strict and far-reaching resolutions were passed during the gathering to address pressing social concerns.
Entry Barred for Couples Who Elope
Taking a firm stance on marriage customs, the mahapanchayat unanimously resolved that any young man or woman from the 21 Naugama Khap villages who elopes to get married will not be allowed to enter their respective villages. According to the panchayat, this collective decision aims to promote family communication, reinforce social responsibility, and put a check on runaway marriages that disrupt community harmony.
Crackdown on Vulgar Songs at Celebrations
The gathering also addressed the growing trend of obscenity during festive and wedding celebrations. The Naugama Khap decided to place a complete ban on playing vulgar, indecent, or objectionable songs at weddings and social gatherings, emphasizing that traditional decorum and cultural values must be maintained during such events. The khap outlined a process for handling non-compliance: families going against the collective rulings will first be counseled, but if they persist in defying the orders, action will be taken against them at the community level.
Pushing for Parental Consent in Live-In Relationships
Furthermore, the khap announced plans to formally approach the government with suggestions to make parental approval mandatory in cases of love marriages and live-in relationships. The leadership stated that ensuring the active involvement and consent of families in such matters can significantly help prevent unfortunate incidents and domestic disputes in the future.
Expanding the Initiative Across Haryana
Naugama Khap President Jaibir Lohan noted that the resolutions at the Ramrai mahapanchayat were adopted jointly by all communities across the 21 villages. He added that these decisions will be shared with other khaps and social organizations throughout Haryana to foster a broader collective movement against prevailing social issues.
