A tragic hit-and-run incident in Karnal, Haryana, has resulted in the death of 79-year-old NRI Kewal Singh. Singh, a citizen of the United States, had arrived in India to visit relatives alongside his son and son-in-law. The family was traveling from Delhi toward Nawanshahr, Punjab, using a private taxi service. The sequence of events leading to the tragedy began when the vehicle stopped near the Bastara toll plaza in Karnal to refill CNG. During this stop, Kewal Singh stepped out of the car to attend to a nature call, but moments later, he became separated from his family and disappeared from their sight.
An Overnight Search for Answers
Upon realizing that Kewal Singh was missing, his relatives immediately launched an extensive search in the surrounding areas, yet they found no trace of him. The darkness of the night further complicated their efforts. Some family members decided to remain in Karnal to continue the search throughout the night, while others proceeded toward Nawanshahr. Despite their desperate attempts, there was no information regarding his whereabouts by morning. Although the family clung to the hope that he might be found safe somewhere, the reality they faced upon returning to the same location at daybreak was devastating.
Body Found Beside the Highway
When the family arrived at the scene the following morning, they discovered a police presence already in place. Following inquiries, it was revealed that the body of an elderly man had been recovered from the roadside. Upon identification, the victim was confirmed to be Kewal Singh. Initial investigations indicate that during the night, an unidentified vehicle struck him, causing his death on the spot. Addressing the incident, officers from the Madhuban police station examined CCTV footage from the vicinity. The investigating officer noted that the footage clearly shows Kewal Singh walking toward the road, where he was subsequently hit by an unknown vehicle. Authorities are currently focused on identifying the vehicle and the driver responsible for the collision.
Mental Health Context and Police Investigation
According to the deceased’s family, Kewal Singh had been struggling with a mental health condition for some time and was receiving treatment for it while in the United States. It is believed that this condition caused him to become disoriented, leading him to wander onto the highway where he became separated from his family. Madhuban police station investigator Manoj Kumar stated that the police have taken possession of the body and initiated post-mortem procedures. A case has been registered against the unidentified driver, and a search operation is underway. The police stated that they are working to track down the vehicle responsible by analyzing CCTV footage and other technical evidence to ensure the perpetrator is brought to justice.
