An unusual traffic disruption unfolded at the Mundhapande bend near the zero point on the Delhi-Rampur Highway in Moradabad, Uttar Pradesh, on November 6 when millions of tiny fish spilled across the road. The incident occurred after a plastic sheet fitted inside a tractor trolley ruptured, cascading water and fish seeds onto the asphalt and bringing vehicular movement on one side of the highway to a complete standstill.
Cause of the Incident and Financial Loss
According to available details, the tractor was transporting a massive consignment of young fish, commonly referred to as fish seeds or fingerlings, intended for release into local breeding ponds. To safely carry such a huge quantity of live fish, the operators had lined the tractor trolley with a thick plastic tarpaulin filled with water. However, while navigating the highway turn near Mundhapande, the tarpaulin unexpectedly tore. The sudden surge of escaping water carried millions of fish seeds onto the open roadway.
Stranded out of water, the delicate fish seeds perished rapidly before rescue efforts could salvage them, resulting in substantial financial losses estimated in lakhs of rupees for the owner.
Police Response and Highway Clearance
The sudden sight of thousands of fish covering the highway caused motorists to slam on their brakes, leading to an immediate traffic bottleneck on the affected stretch. Upon receiving news of the blockage, police personnel rushed to the scene to restore order. Recognizing the urgency, officers enlisted the assistance of nearby residents and willing bystanders. Using brooms and wipers, the team swept the dead fish to the shoulder of the highway, gradually clearing the driving lanes and reopening the corridor to normal traffic.
Similar Road Spills and Highway Hazards
This incident highlights the lingering risks associated with unsecure bulk transit on major highways. A similar road hazard was recorded on the night of October 5 along the Chandrapur-Ballarpur bypass in Maharashtra, where a tanker carrying diesel overturned and spilled thousands of liters of highly flammable fuel onto the road. In that instance, emergency services, including fire engines and police teams, had to act swiftly to clear onlookers and avert a potential fire catastrophe. The recent spill in Moradabad underscores the critical need for proper containment standards when hauling liquid or live goods on high-speed routes.
