Patients in Madhya Pradesh dealing with serious lung conditions are on the verge of a major breakthrough in local healthcare. AIIMS Bhopal is set to begin lung transplant surgeries at approximately Rs 20 lakh, sparing patients the ordeal of traveling to far-off cities like Chennai, Delhi, or Hyderabad for a procedure that has long been both expensive and out of reach.
How Much Cheaper Than Private Hospitals?
A lung transplant at a private hospital typically costs anywhere between Rs 60 lakh and Rs 1 crore, a sum that most ordinary families simply cannot afford. AIIMS Bhopal plans to bring that figure down to around Rs 20 lakh, though the final cost may vary somewhat based on the patient's condition. The state government has also agreed to extend financial assistance to eligible patients who need this treatment.
Two Patients Already on the Waiting List
AIIMS Bhopal has already registered two patients for lung transplants. Both are on the waiting list maintained by SOTTO, the State Organ Donation Society. Their surgeries will proceed as soon as a suitable brain-dead donor becomes available.
First Transplant Expected Within One to Two Months
Doctors estimate that Madhya Pradesh could see its first successful lung transplant within the next one to two months. Dr. Vikram Vatti, a cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon at AIIMS Bhopal, has completed specialized training for this procedure at Vanderbilt University Medical Center in Tennessee, USA. A modern operation theatre along with all the necessary machines and equipment has already been installed at the hospital. The AIIMS Director noted that adding lung transplant capability, after the facility had already established heart transplant services, marks a significant medical achievement for the state.
Patients Currently Forced to Leave the State
At present, around 5 to 6 patients from Madhya Pradesh travel to other states every year for lung transplants, spending heavily in both money and time. This surgery is currently not covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
Long-Term Costs Do Not End With Surgery
A successful transplant is not the end of a patient's medical journey. To prevent the body from rejecting the new lung, patients must take immunosuppression, or anti-rejection, medication for the rest of their lives. This ongoing treatment can cost around Rs 10,000 per month, which means patients and their families need to plan ahead for this sustained financial commitment as well.
