In response to growing health concerns, the District Agriculture and Protection Department in Meerut has launched an extensive monitoring and enforcement drive to target the sale of uncertified, toxic, and counterfeit mosquito repellent sticks across the region.
The Inspection Drive Across Commercial Hubs
Following strict directives from the state government, local authorities have formed dedicated teams to conduct surprise inspections. The enforcement teams are actively scanning retail grocery shops, pharmacies, medical stores, and local marketplaces. The primary objective of this administrative action is to identify and seize counterfeit or uncertified mosquito repellent products that do not comply with safety standards. By auditing these establishments, officials aim to clear retail shelves of hazardous chemical formulations that are being sold without proper licensing.
Severe Health Hazards of Chemical Repellents
Highlighting the severe biological impact of these products, District Agriculture and Protection Officer Rajeev Kumar explained that many locally manufactured, cheap incense sticks escape regulatory scrutiny. These uncertified products are often loaded with unauthorized synthetic pyrethroids and other undisclosed chemical agents. When these sticks are burned in enclosed domestic spaces, they emit highly concentrated toxic fumes. Inhaling this smoke on a regular basis can lead to chronic respiratory ailments, allergic reactions, and severe lung irritation, making it highly dangerous for children, elderly individuals, and asthma patients.
Stricter Warnings and Guidelines for Consumers
During the ongoing field operations, administrative officers are not only seizing illegal stocks but are also sensitizing merchants about the legal repercussions of selling unauthorized chemical goods. Shopkeepers have been issued stern warnings that any future possession or sale of these non-certified incense sticks will result in immediate confiscation and rigorous legal prosecution under agricultural and public safety laws. Consumers are strongly advised to meticulously inspect product labels for valid certifications and chemical disclosures before purchase. Health experts emphasize that if any household repellent triggers breathing difficulties, coughing, or eye irritation, its usage must be discontinued immediately to prevent long-term respiratory damage.
