Barmer District Hospital in Rajasthan has adopted a modern digital e-prescription system to replace outdated and illegible paper slips, following a model established by SMS Hospital in Jaipur. The new arrangement incorporates laser printing technology and high-speed scanners to generate clear, digital prescriptions for every patient visiting the outpatient department.
Instant Access to Medical Records via QR Codes
Under the new initiative, every printed prescription slip features a unique QR code. When hospital staff or doctors scan this code, the patient's entire outpatient department medical history, doctor's recommendations, and prescribed treatments become immediately accessible on both the Integrated Health Management System (IHMS) platform and mobile applications. Hospital Superintendent Dr. Hanuman Ram Chaudhary explained that this unique QR feature forms the backbone of the upgraded digital system, enabling seamless data retrieval and significantly cutting down waiting times for visitors.
Eliminating Prescription Errors and Manual Bureaucracy
Previously, the healthcare facility relied on dot-matrix printers and handwritten carbon copies, which frequently resulted in faint, smudged, or ambiguous text. These illegible notes created considerable confusion for patients and increased the risk of dosage or medication errors at the pharmacy counters. The transition to laser-printed digital prescriptions ensures that doctors' orders, drug names, and precise dosages remain completely clear and easy to read.
Streamlining Counter Operations for Patients and Staff
The digital upgrade brings substantial operational relief to the hospital's free medicine distribution centers. Pharmacists are no longer required to make tedious manual register entries or store bulky paper carbon copies for record-keeping. By eliminating these repetitive manual tasks, the administrative load on counter staff has dropped sharply, allowing them to clear patient queues faster and manage daily operations with greater transparency and speed.
