In most cases, physiological jaundice resolves naturally within 1 to 2 weeks with proper home care, adequate feeding, and gentle exposure to morning sunlight.

While physiological jaundice often subsides on its own, medical data indicates that bilirubin levels steadily escalate to hazardous thresholds in roughly 40 to 50 percent of newborn infants. When bilirubin levels in the bloodstream reach dangerously high concentrations, the pigment crosses the blood-brain barrier, affecting not only the liver but also inflicting permanent structural damage to the brain.
This severe neurological damage is medically termed as Kernicterus. Kernicterus can cause lifelong physical and cognitive disabilities or prove fatal. Misconceptions and superstitious practices around newborn jaundice remain widespread. Dr. Kumar addressed common myths, such as the baseless belief that dressing a newborn in yellow clothing causes or aggravates jaundice. Scientifically, fabric color has no bearing whatsoever on the biological mechanisms of bilirubin production.
Furthermore, many families resort to faith healing, occult rituals, or unverified traditional remedies instead of taking the infant to a hospital. During such practices, symptoms may temporarily seem less visible, misleading parents into believing the infant is recovering. This tragic misjudgment delays professional medical care, allowing bilirubin levels to spike uncontrollably to life-threatening levels.
