Forty-two-year-old Roshan Lal, a resident of Saroa in the Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh, has established a remarkable example of perseverance, dedication, and strong willpower. Hailing from a laboring family, Roshan Lal continued his education despite adverse financial conditions, working hard and taking up labor jobs alongside his studies to attain higher education. After facing failure twice, he finally cleared the commission examination on his third attempt and has now been selected for the post of a CBSE music teacher. Following the announcement of the exam results on August 26, 2026, a wave of joy has spread throughout the region.
A Long Journey of Education and Hardship
Roshan Lal, who belongs to village Saroa in the Saraj assembly constituency near Pandoh in Mandi district, completed his primary education and high school from Saroa School. Subsequently, he earned his senior secondary education from Pandoh School and completed his Bachelor of Arts degree from Mandi College. During his journey of higher education, he went on to earn a double Master of Arts in music and history, along with a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Philosophy from Himachal Pradesh University, and a Diploma in Elementary Education from Delhi University. To achieve success in the commission exam, Roshan Lal made efforts over a long period. He first appeared for the examination in 2012 and a second time in 2017, but did not succeed in either attempt. Despite these setbacks, he did not lose courage and took the examination for a third time in 2026, finally tasting success. Following the declaration of results on August 26, a wave of celebration swept through his family and the surrounding area. Roshan Lal's struggle story does not end here, as he had also faced failure twice during his MPhil examinations, but ultimately topped in Himachal Pradesh in his third attempt, showcasing his hard work and talent.
Family Background and Early Struggles
Roshan Lal's father, Paras Ram, works as a laborer, while his mother, Brasati Devi, is a homemaker. He has two brothers; his brother Birbal works as a mason, while Mahesh Kumar is an electrician and plumber. Roshan Lal shared that due to weak financial conditions, he had to engage in manual labor at various places alongside his studies right from his childhood to keep his education going. Despite the difficult circumstances, he never abandoned the path of education. Roshan Lal has also been rendering his services in the field of education for a long time. He served at Palampur DAV in 2012-2013, followed by stints at Nav Bharti Public Senior Secondary School Saroa in 2013-2014 and 2014-2015. Since 2015, he has been serving as the headmaster and chairman at MS Public School Saroa. Roshan Lal has also carved a distinct identity in the field of music, performing devotional bhajans and kirtans at religious events and teaching music to students and locals at the village level. Additionally, he has performed at various Himachali fairs and cultural programs. Alongside attaining higher education in music, his selection as a CBSE music teacher is considered a landmark milestone in his musical journey. Roshan Lal's wife, Parvati Devi, is also educated with an MA and a BEd.

Roshan Lal states that an individual should never stop trying when faced with failure in life, and his own journey stands as testimony to this mindset. Roshan Lal credited his success to the hard work, sacrifices, and values of his parents, coupled with the constant support and encouragement of his wife, Parvati Devi. He noted that his family's backing has been his greatest strength throughout his struggling journey. Roshan Lal expressed special gratitude to his music guru, Dr. Kalyan Chand Mandhotra, who provided him with free music lessons during morning and evening hours when he was a struggling student facing poverty, playing a special role in helping him reach this milestone.
