A dramatic overnight search and rescue effort conducted by police officers in Shimla district ended successfully after four pilgrims who strayed off course in the dense wilderness of Churdhar were located alive and unharmed. The group, consisting of a young married couple and two companions, had lost their orientation while descending from the high-altitude pilgrimage destination on Sunday evening.
Midnight Search Operation in Chopal Forest
The emergency response mechanism was triggered late on Sunday night when the Shimla police control room received an urgent alert through the 112 helpline number. The call reported that several travelers coming back from the shrine were stranded without directions inside the forest cover. Officers from the Chopal police station were immediately mobilized to initiate a search mission despite severe visibility challenges, steep terrain, and pitch-black darkness.
Trekking into the wilderness near Patal Khadd, the rescue teams located two young men around midnight. They were identified as twenty-two-year-old Rahul and twenty-one-year-old Sanket, both residents of Mohali in Punjab. While executing this first retrieval, rescuers received word regarding another couple stranded elsewhere in the surrounding woods. Pushing deeper into the dark forest trail, the team managed to trace twenty-six-year-old Rahul and his twenty-four-year-old wife Madhu, who belong to Karnal district in Haryana. Senior Superintendent of Police Gaurav Singh confirmed that all four individuals were brought to safety without injuries and provided with temporary lodging arrangements.
Significance and Challenges of the Churdhar Trek
Churdhar stands as the highest elevation point in the Sirmaur district of Himachal Pradesh, soaring to an altitude of nearly 12,000 feet above sea level. Regarded as the sacred abode and penance site of Lord Shirgul Maharaj, the mountain attracts thousands of devout visitors every year. Pilgrims typically choose between two main trekking routes to reach the summit shrine: an 18-kilometer walking path originating from Nohradhar, or a considerably steeper 9-kilometer climb starting from Chopal.
Navigating the terrain requires caution due to extreme weather conditions and dense forest stretches. During the harsh winter season, the high mountain peak receives heavy snowfall measuring between 15 and 20 feet. These severe snow accumulations completely block passage and render the entire region isolated from the surrounding areas and the rest of the world for several months.
