The investigation into the murder of dacoit Jagan Gurjar inside Ajmer's high security jail on June 29 is turning up fresh and troubling details with each passing day. The latest finding shows that at the exact moment a violent struggle was underway inside the barrack, radios were blaring at full volume in the barracks located on both sides of that block. Investigators now believe that even if Jagan Gurjar tried to scream or call for help to save himself, his voice was drowned out by the loud radios and never reached either the other inmates or the jail guards on duty.
Police probing the entire conspiracy, not just the killing
Police are not simply trying to establish how Jagan Gurjar died. The investigation now covers much wider ground. Officers are examining whether the attack was pre-planned, whether Jagan was given some drugged or poisonous substance right before he was killed, and whether any other inmate or outsider had a hand in the conspiracy. Each of these angles is being probed separately so that no lead is overlooked.
Accused questioned after being taken out on a production warrant
On Friday, Civil Lines police station officers took Vishnu alias Bauna, the accused in the murder, out of jail on a production warrant. Under the watch of armed personnel, he was taken to JLN Hospital for a medical examination. Once the medical check was done, police launched a detailed interrogation. During questioning, Vishnu claimed that he killed Jagan Gurjar to establish his own dominance and fear in the criminal underworld. Police officers, however, are not treating this claim as the final word. They have made it clear that no conclusion will be drawn on the basis of the accused's statement alone, and every claim he makes is being cross checked against evidence and the ongoing investigation.
Police are also trying to determine how much Jagan struggled during the attack, whether he was drugged or rendered unconscious before the killing, exactly when the murder was planned, and whether anyone besides Vishnu played a role in the entire episode. Investigating officers believe a clear picture of the full sequence of events will only emerge once the medical report, the FSL report and other evidence come in. That is why no possibility is being ruled out at this stage.
Guards' statements reveal the role the radios played
Police have also recorded statements from both jail guards who were on duty in that block that night. One of the two guards had been posted at the high security jail only about a month earlier. Both guards told police that radios were playing in the barracks on either side of the block at the time of the incident, which is why they did not hear any scream, noise or sound of a struggle. The preliminary finding is that the noise from the radios kept whatever happened inside the barrack from reaching the outside.
What happens next: all eyes on the medical and FSL reports
For now, Civil Lines police station is investigating the case in depth. Police say further action will depend on the medical report, the FSL report, the interrogation of the accused and the other evidence gathered so far. Only once the investigation is complete will the full truth of what happened inside the jail that night come to light.
