Severe weather has triggered a major crisis across Jammu and Kashmir as relentless rainfall wreaks havoc throughout the region. Landslides in mountain areas and severe waterlogging in lower-lying zones have disrupted normal life, claiming at least 12 lives and leaving several people missing. Responding to the escalating disaster, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah cut short his official visit to Delhi and returned to Jammu on Sunday afternoon. The administration has been placed on high alert as meteorological services predict continued moderate to heavy rainfall across the union territory in the coming days.
Chief Minister Convenes Urgent High-Level Briefing
Chief Minister Omar Abdullah had travelled to the national capital to advocate for the restoration of full statehood for Jammu and Kashmir. However, the worsening weather situation, particularly in the Poonch and Rajouri sectors, forced him to curtail his meetings and return to Jammu on Sunday afternoon. Immediately upon his arrival, the Chief Minister chaired an emergency review meeting at 6:00 PM in the Jammu Civil Secretariat. The high-level conference, which went on for more than an hour and a half, brought together senior administrative and security officials.
Divisional Commissioners from both the Jammu and Kashmir divisions participated in the meeting via video link. They presented a comprehensive assessment of the current ground realities, water levels, and ongoing rescue efforts in their respective jurisdictions. Abdullah directed all district authorities to remain on high alert and prioritize public safety in areas vulnerable to flash floods and landslides.
Ensuring Essential Supplies and Swift Infrastructure Restoration
During the administrative review, the Chief Minister scrutinized the availability of essential commodities, including food grains, medicines, and clean drinking water, across all districts. He instructed officers to keep a round-the-clock watch on high-risk, low-lying zones. According to the Chief Minister’s Office, Abdullah emphasized the need for seamless coordination among different government departments to ensure that relief materials reach affected families without any bureaucratic delay.
The mountain terrain has experienced multiple landslides, blocking crucial highways and rural arterial roads, which has severely hit transport networks. Furthermore, uprooted trees and damaged electricity poles have disrupted power distribution in several sectors. The Chief Minister ordered the concerned departments to work on a war footing to clear blocked roads and restore electricity services as quickly as possible.
Severe Flooding Devastates Poonch and Rajouri Districts
Overnight torrential rains have inflicted severe damage on the Poonch and Rajouri districts of the Jammu division. The sudden rise in water levels and landslide incidents have resulted in at least 12 confirmed casualties, while search operations continue for several individuals reported missing. In Rajouri town, floodwaters entered low-lying residential neighborhoods, prompting emergency services to carry out a massive evacuation drive that relocated hundreds of residents to safer shelters.
Expressing deep grief over the loss of lives in the flash floods, the Chief Minister stated that the government is closely monitoring the evolving situation. He extended his condolences to the bereaved families and assured them that rescue, relief, and rehabilitation operations would be carried out swiftly and effectively across all impacted zones.
Active On-Ground Monitoring and Political Activities
In a statement shared on the social media platform X, the Chief Minister affirmed that he is personally keeping a close watch on the developments. He mentioned being in direct contact with local legislators from Rajouri and surrounding areas to receive real-time updates on the ground situation. Abdullah underscored that the primary objective of the administration is to save precious human lives, promising that the government will extend comprehensive assistance to those whose properties have been damaged by the floods.
Despite the administrative emergency, the Chief Minister confirmed that the political programs of his party would go ahead as planned. The National Conference will proceed with its scheduled protest in Delhi on July 20 to demand the restoration of statehood, led by party president Farooq Abdullah.
Amarnath and Vaishno Devi Yatras Suspended
The inclement weather has also impacted major religious pilgrimages in the union territory. To guarantee the safety of pilgrims, authorities have suspended the Amarnath Yatra since July 19 until further notice, stopping devotees from proceeding beyond base camps. Similarly, the Vaishno Devi Yatra has been temporarily halted due to the ongoing heavy rainfall and the risk of landslides along the track. The administration has advised devotees to plan their travel only after weather conditions improve. With weather forecasts predicting moderate to heavy rain across Jammu and Kashmir until July 23, the next few days remain highly critical for the region.
