Interception of a Suspect During Checkpoint Screening
The sequence of enforcement actions traces back to a joint security deployment on 1 August 2026. A coordinated team comprising the Baramulla Police, Rashtriya Rifles, CRPF, and BSF had established a tactical checkpoint near Jhandfarn (Goriwan crossing) in the Sheeri sector. During the systematic physical verification, an individual walking from the Namblan Goriwan direction towards Sheeri abruptly attempted to flee upon spotting the security cordon. Vigilant personnel swiftly closed in on him and neutralized any escape attempt. The apprehended individual was subsequently identified as Aijaz Ahmad Ganie.
A preliminary search led to the recovery of lethal military-grade equipment and communication devices. Forces seized one pistol, one magazine, 10 live rounds of 9mm ammunition, a mobile handset, and two operational SIM cards from his direct possession. Following the seizure, an FIR was registered under the Arms Act at the Sheeri police station, initiating a broader investigation into his network links.
Plotting Strikes on Forces and Outsiders
Sustained interrogation of the suspect unraveled a wider and deeply orchestrated conspiracy. Aijaz disclosed that in August 2024, he had received the pistol along with two hand grenades from active militants sheltered in the dense forested terrain of Namblan. Acting on operational directives issued by these militants, he was tasked with orchestrating targeted attacks against police personnel and non-local residents stationed across the Sheeri jurisdiction.
As detectives expanded the investigation, a targeted search of the suspect's residence yielded an additional cache of two live hand grenades. Detailed evidence established that during 2024, the suspect had systematically utilized his two-storey residential structure to shelter armed operatives, offering them secure sanctuary and extensive logistical backup. The premises functioned continuously as a functional staging facility for subversive terror-linked activities.
Property Attachment Ordered Under Section 25 of UAPA
The investigative findings firmly verified that the two-storey residential building had served repeatedly as an operational asset for terrorism. In accordance with statutory legal definitions, real estate assets that facilitate and derive utility from such conduct fall directly within the legal scope of proceeds of terrorism. Acting on this established ground, Director General of Police Nalin Prabhat exercised the statutory authority vested under Section 25 of the UAPA to formally issue an attachment order for the residential structure. Security agencies have reiterated that aggressive actions targeting the financial and logistical backbone of terror rings will continue unabated across the region.
