Winter has set in ahead of schedule across Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh, bringing sharp drops in night temperatures across both high-altitude terrains and valley floors. Several regions in the Kashmir Valley recorded sub-zero temperatures for the first time this season. Leh registered the region's lowest temperature at -4.2°C, while Shopian in South Kashmir experienced its coldest night of the winter so far at -0.9°C. Temperatures across most valley locations hovered around the freezing mark, indicating an unusually early arrival of intense cold.
Detailed Temperature Breakdown Across Kashmir Valley
Data issued by the meteorological department highlights a widespread cold wave across the region. Pulwama registered a minimum of -0.3°C, while the tourist destination of Pahalgam touched the freezing mark at 0.0°C. Kokernag recorded a minimum temperature of 0.2°C. Srinagar and Qazigund were relatively milder, both recording 2.0°C, though conditions remained chilly throughout the night.
Elsewhere in the valley, Srinagar Airport recorded 0.8°C, Sonamarg stood at 0.6°C, and both Budgam and Konibal in Pampore logged 1.1°C. The hill resort of Gulmarg recorded 1.2°C, while Kupwara in North Kashmir registered 1.5°C. Baramulla at 3.7°C and Kulgam at 3.3°C remained the relatively warmer locations across the Kashmir Valley.
Frigid Conditions Prevail Across Ladakh
Sub-zero conditions tightened their grip over the high-altitude cold desert of Ladakh. Beyond Leh's low of -4.2°C, Kargil recorded -1.4°C and the Nubra Valley registered -0.9°C. Sub-zero night temperatures are typical for Ladakh by early November, but the latest plunge reflects a rapid escalation of the cold trend that began in late October.
Factors Driving the Sharp Dip in Temperature
According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Meteorological Centre Srinagar, three main factors explain the early intensification of cold weather: clear night skies, dry continental winds, and pronounced radiational cooling under calm atmospheric conditions. A weak Western Disturbance that had affected the region earlier in the week has receded, leaving behind clear and dry atmospheric conditions.
Weather Outlook and Snowfall Forecast
The weather outlook indicates that dry conditions will prevail across Jammu & Kashmir from November 6 to November 9, with clear to partly cloudy skies keeping night temperatures low. A fresh Western Disturbance is projected to arrive on November 10, bringing light rain or snowfall to higher reaches from the evening of November 10 through November 11.
Between November 12 and November 13, overcast skies are anticipated across the region. Light to moderate rainfall is expected in the plains, accompanied by light to moderate snowfall in upper reaches, particularly around the evening of November 12.
Advisory for Farmers and Travelers
Horticulturists and farmers across the Kashmir Valley have been advised to protect remaining crops and fruit trees against frost damage. Travelers and tourists visiting destinations including Gulmarg, Pahalgam, Sonamarg, and Ladakh should carry heavy woollens due to significant variations between day and night temperatures. Road conditions on high mountain passes may deteriorate between November 10 and November 12 as snowfall begins. Meanwhile, weather patterns elsewhere showed notable shifts, with Delhi recording its cleanest October air quality in 12 years alongside broken weather records.
