Heavy rains during the month of August across Palamu district have brought welcome moisture to parched fields, but the deluge has simultaneously created severe complications for standing pulse crops. Driven by a low-pressure formation originating over West Bengal, Palamu recorded nearly 313 mm of rainfall in August alone. While overall seasonal precipitation was needed, continuous rain creates high risk for crops that are sensitive to root saturation. Agricultural authorities are urging farmers to adopt proactive field management practices immediately to protect their pigeon pea fields from rot and disease outbreaks.
Palamu Arhar Heritage and Standing Water Risks
Palamu holds a distinguished reputation for producing high-quality Arhar (pigeon pea), with its local varieties prized across neighboring regions for their distinct aroma and superior taste. Prompted by strong market demand, agricultural workers expanded pigeon pea sowing across extensive acreage this season. However, the accumulation of 313 mm of August rainfall has led to prolonged standing water in lower-lying fields. When pigeon pea roots remain submerged under water for extended periods, oxygen deprivation occurs, severely weakening the root system and creating ideal conditions for destructive fungal infections to take hold.
Which Farmers Face Higher Risk and Who Is Protected
Agricultural specialist Dr. Pramod Kumar provided detailed technical guidance regarding the situation, noting that field preparation techniques will determine the extent of crop damage. Farmers who applied seed treatment compounds prior to sowing and planted their pigeon peas on raised ridges or embankments are likely to suffer minimal loss. Ridge farming allows excess water to run off naturally, keeping the vital root zone aerated. Conversely, fields situated in low-lying terrain where seeds were sown without preliminary treatment face severe vulnerability. These farmers must prioritize clearing drainage channels to release trapped surface water without delay.
Weed Control and Fungicide Treatment Guidelines
Following heavy precipitation, elevated soil moisture frequently leads to rapid weed emergence, which deprives the primary crop of critical soil nutrients and sunlight. To counteract aggressive weed competition, experts recommend applying Pendimethalin in accordance with standard agricultural guidelines. To prevent the onset of fungal wilt and root decay caused by persistent humidity, farmers are advised to spray Carbendazim dissolved at a concentration of 2 grams per liter of water. Alternative broad-spectrum fungicides such as Mancozeb may also be utilized depending on localized crop conditions.
In addition to chemical interventions, manual weeding combined with active water drainage remains essential for restoring optimal field soil conditions. Soil enriched with adequate potash during initial sowing endures climatic stress and moisture imbalance far better, as potassium strengthens plant stems and cell walls. Specialists caution that all fungicide and herbicide treatments should be calibrated strictly to individual field requirements after consulting local agricultural extension officers.
