Long-running anti-naxal operations across Jharkhand are yielding clear results, as the underground network finds itself severely weakened on the ground. The systematic arrest of top-tier leaders, the elimination of key cadres in armed encounters, and a steady stream of surrenders have dramatically eroded the operational capacity of these banned outfits. A major milestone in this ongoing campaign was marked in July with the high-profile arrest of top Maoist leader Misir Besra, who carried a bounty of one crore rupees. Even with these sweeping tactical victories, law enforcement agencies remain on high alert, turning their immediate attention toward more than a thousand hardened extremists and naxals currently lodged in various correctional facilities across the state.
Targeting the Hidden Network Inside Jails
According to intelligence inputs gathered by police headquarters, authorities are closely tracking the daily movements and legacy networks of inmates currently behind bars. While recent crackdowns have successfully dismantled much of the active field infrastructure, law enforcement acknowledges that the threat has not been completely eradicated. Jharkhand Police suspects that certain notorious commanders locked away in prisons still retain remnants of their old operational channels. There remains a persistent risk that these figures could attempt to orchestrate a revival of their underground factions from inside the prison walls using outside associates. Consequently, extraordinary monitoring measures have been deployed within state jails to keep a close watch on the communications and contacts of these incarcerated elements.
Only 17 Wanted Naxals Remain At Large
The security apparatus notched another significant win recently in the Dumri area of Gumla district, where four operatives were captured, including Ramdev Lohra, a sub-zonal commander of the JJMP who carried a cash reward of five lakh rupees. Alongside Lohra, area commander Arvind Naik and two other members were apprehended during the operation. Security forces recovered a substantial cache of arms and ammunition from their possession, including an AK-56 rifle, an SLR, a semi-automatic rifle, handguns, and thousands of cartridges. Police sources indicate that following these arrests, the total count of wanted naxals remaining at large in Jharkhand has dropped to just 17, with nine of them linked directly to the CPI (Maoist). Central security forces are currently operating in tandem with state police units to hunt down these remaining fugitives.
Surrender and Arrest Statistics for the Year
Data released by the Jharkhand Police department highlights the intensity of the crackdown between January 1 and August 5, 2026. During this timeframe, 103 naxals were taken into custody, while 46 chose to lay down their arms and surrender. Additionally, 22 extremists lost their lives in armed exchanges with security personnel. Throughout these operations, forces recovered 98 firearms, 7,470 rounds of ammunition, and 11 kilograms of explosives. The captured individuals include top-tier figures such as the one-crore bounty leader Misir Besra. Officials emphasize that this relentless operational pressure has critically diminished the striking power of extremist groups throughout the region.
IG Operations Narendra Kumar Singh stated that law enforcement is taking strict precautions to ensure that no jailed naxal or notorious criminal manages to hatch conspiracies from within the prison system. Special surveillance protocols have been instituted inside correctional facilities to achieve this goal. Police are not merely observing the routine conduct of these inmates but are actively mapping out their historical contacts and external support structures. This multidimensional approach demonstrates that anti-naxal strategies in Jharkhand are no longer confined strictly to forested terrain, as dismantling the urban and prison-based logistics networks of these outfits becomes a core priority for the administration.
