Preparations for the upcoming Durga Puja festival have gathered immense momentum across Palamau district in Jharkhand. To draw devotees and visitors during the festive week, various puja committees across the region are working relentlessly on grand and imaginative thematic pandals. While several venues plan to recreate the aura of famous shrines across the nation, others are curating intricate decorative themes. In one of the most prominent projects of the season, the Sarvajanik Durga Puja Samiti near Bharat Mata Chowk in Medininagar is constructing an expansive pandal designed on the architectural replica of the sacred Tirupati Balaji temple. Being erected with an estimated expenditure of around ₹20 lakh, this temporary structure is slated to become a major attraction for devotees visiting the town.
Budget Doubled as Craftsmen Shape Tirupati Balaji Replica
Committee functionaries shared that the financial layout for constructing the pandal this year has nearly doubled compared to the funds allocated in the previous season. Artisans have been working on the ground uninterrupted for the past one and a half months to erect the massive edifice. The finished structure will stand at an impressive height of 80 to 85 feet. The main objective of the organizers is to provide local residents and visiting pilgrims with a visual encounter mirroring the grandeur of the Tirupati Balaji shrine right here in Medininagar. Organizers noted that the inspiration for this specific architectural concept was drawn from the model crafted two years ago by the renowned Sreebhumi Sporting Club in Kolkata.
Structure Relies on Bamboo, Plywood and Golden Accents Without Fabric
The engineering of this elaborate model departs from conventional decorative techniques. Workers are utilizing nearly 2,000 bamboo poles alongside 800 CFT of timber to construct the core framework. In addition, roughly 400 sheets of plywood measuring six by four feet are being integrated into the elevation. Unlike typical pandal setups that rely heavily on decorative cloth and drapes, this structure avoids the use of fabric entirely. Instead, artisans are carving out temple silhouettes using layered foam molds finished with golden paint over the plywood surface, creating a distinct metallic sheen reminiscent of the sanctum. To further engage visitors, an LED display screen will be installed right beside the main entrance gate.
15-Foot Idol Sculpted Using Clay Sourced from Kolkata
Highlighting the visual core of the sanctum, committee representative Anay Singh explained that the central idol of Goddess Durga will also showcase distinctive artistry. A 15-foot-tall idol is being sculpted with specific attention given to departing from standard conventional forms into an exceptional spiritual posture. Craftsmen have been briefed with custom instructions, utilizing alluvial clay brought specifically from Kolkata to ensure authentic finishing and durability. Organizers anticipate that the combined visual appeal of the 15-foot deity and the temple facade will draw pilgrims in heavy numbers.
Celebrations Mark 46 Years of Tradition with a Three-Day Community Feast
Anay Singh mentioned that the tradition of organizing Durga Puja at Bharat Mata Chowk dates back to 1980. The committee is thus observing approximately 46 years of its devotional legacy this festive cycle. To commemorate the milestone alongside the grand structure, the organizers have arranged a community feast spanning three full days, allowing devotees to partake in sacred offerings. Committee members are currently working alongside master craftsmen to add the final architectural touches, ensuring visitors experience a truly elevated spiritual ambiance throughout the festival.
