In Kalamati, located within Jharkhand's Khunti district, an inspiring journey of grit and athletic ambition is unfolding at the PM Shri Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya. Thirteen-year-old tribal student Sukarmani Tuti, currently enrolled in the eighth grade, is determined to carve out a career as an elite archer. Drawing deep inspiration from renowned Olympian archer Deepika Kumari, the young athlete has set her sights on reaching the global stage despite confronting formidable physical limitations and an acute lack of material resources.
Early Childhood Tragedy and the Struggle with Damaged Prosthetics
Sukarmani suffered the loss of one of her legs in a traumatic accident when she was only three years old. After spending years navigating mobility challenges, she was fitted with an artificial leg at the age of 11. That prosthetic limb provided her with the balance needed to pursue archery, a sport demanding exceptional posture, stability, and focus. However, the artificial leg has now sustained severe structural damage, breaking in its lower section. To avoid breaking her routine, the prosthetic has merely been glued together as a temporary repair so she can continue walking and practicing.
Upcoming Para National Games and Administrative Intervention
The immediate target on Sukarmani's calendar is the upcoming Para National Games scheduled to take place in Kochi, Kerala. She is slated to depart for Kochi on December 15, but securing a berth requires her to first clear the hurdle of the state-level qualifying championship. Meenu Baraik, the warden of PM Shri Kasturba Balika Vidyalaya, shared that efforts are actively underway through the Khunti district administration to supply the young archer with a new artificial leg. The Khunti DC is directly spearheading this initiative. Furthermore, Chaitali Pathak, a resource teacher at the school, noted that both the administrative authorities and school management keep a close watch on children with disabilities to ensure essential necessities are arranged in a timely fashion.
Lack of Archery Equipment and Complete Dependence on Coaches
Beyond her broken prosthetic leg, Sukarmani faces another major obstacle in the form of training equipment. She owns no bow, arrows, or personal archery gear of any kind. Consequently, her entire preparation depends on visits by her coaches, Ashish Kumar and Danish Ansari. She is only able to access standard archery equipment and practice when the two coaches travel to her school with gear in tow, leaving her training regimen severely constrained whenever they are absent.
Family Hardships and the Drive to Overcome Adversity
Sukarmani hails from Jordag village within the Maranghada panchayat of Khunti district. Her parents sustain the household through small-scale farming and daily wage labor. Financial hardship has also scattered her family: one of her two elder brothers migrated to Mumbai in search of employment, while the other works locally at a fast-food eatery in Khunti. Despite living amid scarce means, Sukarmani remains determined to overcome physical adversity and achieve her athletic ambitions. How comprehensively administrative mechanisms and institutional support step forward will prove decisive in determining how far her sporting journey can progress.
