A horrific tragedy unfolded in Matki Tanda village of Aland taluka in Karnataka's Kalaburagi district on Tuesday morning, when a domestic dispute culminated in a deadly suicide bombing. A 49-year-old quarry worker detonated commercial explosives strapped to his waist inside his in-laws' home, killing himself and his 15-year-old daughter on the spot. Five other family members suffered severe blast injuries and are currently undergoing emergency treatment at a nearby hospital.
Marital Conflict and Background of the Incident
According to initial details gathered by the police, the deceased man has been identified as 49-year-old Shivlal Rathod. Shivlal was employed at a stone quarry in Pune, Maharashtra. For a considerable period, he had been embroiled in an escalating marital discord with his wife, Savita. Distressed by persistent domestic quarrels, Savita had recently moved out of Pune and relocated to her parental house in Matki Tanda village, taking along their 15-year-old daughter, Veera, and 19-year-old son, Prakash. Shivlal was deeply aggrieved by his wife's refusal to return and the failure to resolve their marital issues, which led him to conspire a deadly attack.
Escalation and Blast Inside the Locked Room
On Tuesday morning, Shivlal unexpectedly arrived at his in-laws' residence in Matki Tanda from Pune. Upon entering the house, he engaged in a heated argument with Savita and other family members. As the confrontation intensified, Shivlal lost control. Before anyone present could comprehend his intentions or react, he swiftly locked the room's main door from the inside. At that moment, his wife Savita, daughter Veera, son Prakash, and several other relatives were trapped inside the room with him.
Shivlal had arrived wearing a belt stuffed with commercial gelatin sticks around his waist. Within moments of locking the door, he triggered the detonator. The resulting explosion was so intense that it tore through the structure of the room, sending shockwaves across the entire village.
Tragic Casualties and Condition of the Injured
The impact of the suicide attack instantly killed Shivlal Rathod, ripping his body apart. Tragically, his 15-year-old daughter Veera, who was seated close to him, absorbed the direct force of the blast and succumbed to her injuries immediately. The high-intensity blast also left five other individuals inside the room severely wounded with burns and shrapnel injuries.

Preliminary inquiries suggest that Shivlal likely stole the gelatin sticks and detonators from his quarry workplace in Pune and smuggled them to Karnataka. Authorities are now auditing safety protocols at the quarry to ascertain whether significant security lapses allowed the unauthorized removal of regulated explosives. What began as a domestic dispute has now expanded into a major criminal inquiry involving severe breaches of industrial explosive safety regulations.
