A massive political storm has erupted in Karnataka over jailed activist Umar Khalid, following highly controversial statements made by Karnataka Congress President B.K. Hariprasad. While speaking on the ongoing tensions surrounding a premier educational institution in Bengaluru, the senior Congress leader termed Khalid a "true nationalist." This remark immediately triggered an intense war of words between the ruling Congress party and the opposition BJP, raising questions about political narratives on national security and patriotism.
The Spark of the Controversy at Bengaluru University
The entire issue began at the National Law School of India University (NLSIU) in Bengaluru, where a student-led organization planned to host a documentary screening focusing on Umar Khalid. The announcement of the event met with severe resistance from the student group ABVP, which staged protests against the screening. Citing safety concerns and the potential for unrest on campus, the university administration decided to postpone the program indefinitely. Responding to this development, B.K. Hariprasad launched a sharp attack against ABVP. He stated that those opposing the documentary screening have no moral standing to lecture others on nationalism, as they worship Nathuram Godse, whom he described as India's first terrorist. Hariprasad strongly defended Khalid, declaring him a genuine nationalist who is being unjustly targeted.
BJP Launches a Fierce Counteroffensive
The BJP reacted swiftly and aggressively to Hariprasad's comments, framing them as a textbook example of divisive and appeasement-driven politics. During a press conference, BJP MP Sambit Patra condemned the Congress leader's remarks, calling them deeply shameful and highly reprehensible. Patra reminded the public that Umar Khalid is not an ordinary activist but an accused facing critical charges under the stringent Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) for his alleged involvement in orchestrating the Delhi riots conspiracy. He highlighted that Khalid's legal pleas have found no favor in the judiciary, with several courts, including the Supreme Court of India, repeatedly turning down his bail applications. Patra questioned how a political party could brand an individual accused of such grave anti-national activities as a patriot.
Allegations of Appeasement and Historical Parallels
To strengthen his critique, Sambit Patra drew comparisons to past events, specifically referencing Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik. He alleged that the Congress party has a historical tendency of standing alongside forces that challenge the country's unity and integrity. Patra claimed that just as Congress had welcomed Yasin Malik with open arms in the past, they are now applying the same protective approach to Umar Khalid. According to the BJP, the Congress leadership is willfully turning a blind eye to the ongoing investigations of national security agencies and the clear rulings of the judiciary. The opposition party asserted that this stance is entirely motivated by vote-bank arithmetic and a desire to appease specific demographics at the cost of national security.
