In a deeply tragic incident in the Yelahanka area of Bengaluru, two young women from Nepal were found dead under suspicious circumstances. Their bodies were discovered hanging from a tree opposite a hotel on Jakkur Road. Passersby who noticed the scene immediately alerted the local police. A team from the Yelahanka Police Station rushed to the spot, secured the area, and transferred the bodies for post-mortem examination. Initial police inquiries indicate that the two women were in a same-sex relationship and were suffering from extreme mental distress due to severe family opposition and pressure for forced marriages.
From Childhood Companionship to Romantic Relationship
According to police records, the deceased have been identified as Sirjana, aged 22, and Rita, aged 23. Both belonged to Nepal and were also relatives. Having grown up together since childhood, they shared an exceptionally close bond during their school years. Over time, their friendship evolved into a committed romantic relationship. However, when news of their relationship spread across their native village, they faced relentless societal taunts and prejudice. Family members strongly objected to their same-sex partnership.
Relocation to Bengaluru to Force a Separation
Hoping that physical distance would diminish their attachment, relatives decided to separate the two women. Approximately one month ago, family members brought both Sirjana and Rita from Nepal to Bengaluru. Upon arriving in the city, they initially stayed at the residence of Sirjana's brother. Shortly thereafter, relatives placed them in separate locations across Bengaluru, housing Rita in Fraser Town and keeping Sirjana in the Jakkur locality. The family believed that living apart would gradually break their emotional bond.
Secret Meetings and Escalating Pressure for Forced Marriage
Despite being kept in different neighborhoods, the two women refused to remain apart. They managed to meet secretly three to four times a week, frequently organizing their encounters during lunch gatherings at relatives' houses. During these meetings, family members intensified their demands that both women marry men. Relatives explicitly informed them that society would never accept their relationship and actively began arranging prospective matches for them. Facing forced marriages and believing their future together was impossible, both women fell into severe emotional distress.
