Initiating the Application via Sarathi on the Transport Portal
Securing a full driving licence is systematically divided into two sequential stages. To begin, an individual must visit the official transport portal and access the Sarathi service option. Identity verification relies on the applicant's Aadhaar card. Once the details are authenticated, an official link is dispatched to the mobile number linked with Aadhaar. By accessing this link, candidates are required to watch instructional tutorial videos explaining road signs, driving regulations, and essential traffic etiquette to prepare for the assessment.
Online Test Format and Minimum Passing Benchmarks
After completing the instructional module, candidates can take the online assessment from home using a desktop computer or mobile device. The digital test consists of 15 multiple-choice questions designed to evaluate basic road awareness and traffic regulations. To successfully clear the examination, an applicant must answer at least 9 questions correctly. Achieving this benchmark confirms that the applicant has absorbed the core principles necessary for entry-level vehicular movement.
Camera Surveillance and Precautions During the Digital Test
While the option to take the exam from home provides immense convenience, stringent digital monitoring protocols are enforced to ensure integrity. The device camera remains continuously active throughout the evaluation. The applicant's face must stay clearly visible on screen at all times, and their attention should remain fixed on the questions. If the camera captures another individual in the frame or detects secondary voices in the background, the testing system flags the incident as an irregularity, which can result in the immediate rejection of the entire application. Maintaining a reliable internet connection is equally crucial to prevent interruptions during the session.
Prescribed Fee Structure for Learner Licences
The department maintains a standardized fee schedule depending on the vehicle categories chosen. For a learner licence covering a single category, such as a motorcycle or two-wheeler, the official fee is 200 rupees. Applicants wishing to combine two vehicle categories, such as a two-wheeler and a four-wheeler car simultaneously, are required to pay 350 rupees. Candidates can execute the transaction directly online from home or seek operational support at nearby public service centres and internet cafes.
Transitioning to a Permanent Driving Licence After One Month
Once the learner licence is approved, the holder becomes eligible to apply for a permanent driving licence after completing a mandatory waiting period of one month. The prescribed fee for securing a permanent licence is 700 rupees for a single vehicle category and 1000 rupees for two vehicle categories. Upon completing the waiting window, candidates can book their appointment slot online and fulfill the final procedural requirements to receive their permanent credential. This end-to-end digital arrangement significantly curtails administrative delays while conserving time and travel expenses for citizens.
