Netherlands carried a slender 2-1 lead into the closing stages of their FIFA World Cup Group F fixture against Tunisia, after Hazem Mastouri's second-half header briefly threatened to derail a first-half surge from the Dutch. The contest stayed open from the opening whistle, with both goalkeepers called into repeated action and the match twice halted, once for a drinks break and once for a separate delay in play.
Dutch pressure early, Tunisia respond in flashes
Denzel Dumfries won an early free kick on the right wing for Netherlands in the 8th minute, setting the tone for a game the Dutch controlled territorially in its opening quarter hour. Two minutes later, Frenkie de Jong drove a left-footed effort from the centre of the box, but a Tunisia defender blocked it before it could threaten the goal.
Tunisia hit back almost immediately. In the 11th minute, Anis Ben Slimane rose for a header from the middle of the penalty area, created by a Yan Valery cross, only for Netherlands goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen to save it in the centre of goal. Netherlands then conceded a corner in the same minute after an error from Nathan Ake.
Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida was penalised for a foul in the 15th minute, handing Netherlands a free kick, and moments later Tijjani Reijnders won another free kick on the right wing. Free kicks and half-chances before the break
At 33 minutes and 23 seconds, Hannibal Mejbri won a free kick in a defensive area for Tunisia after Frenkie de Jong committed a foul. At the 37th minute, Ryan Gravenberch won a free kick in his own defensive half, only for Mohamed Amine Ben Hamida to concede one at the other end moments later.
Gravenberch then tried his luck from outside the box at 38 minutes and 57 seconds, his right-footed shot, assisted by Brobbey, drifting high and wide to the right. At 41 minutes and 18 seconds, Brobbey's right-footed attempt from the centre of the box, set up by Malen, was blocked.
Denzel Dumfries then tested Dahmen at 43 minutes and 26 seconds with a left-footed shot from the right side of the box, assisted by de Jong, but the Tunisia goalkeeper saved it in the centre of goal. Tunisia's Yan Valery was flagged offside at 43 minutes and 52 seconds. The first half ended at 48 minutes and 5 seconds with Tunisia trailing Netherlands 0-2, after the fourth official had signalled three minutes of added time at 45 minutes and 9 seconds.
Second half begins, Mastouri pulls one back
The second half kicked off with the score still reading Tunisia 0, Netherlands 2. Cody Gakpo was flagged offside for Netherlands at 46 minutes and 42 seconds. Hazem Mastouri won a free kick in a defensive area for Tunisia at 48 minutes and 45 seconds after Virgil van Dijk committed a foul.
Denzel Dumfries had a right-footed effort from the centre of the box blocked at 50 minutes and 42 seconds, and Jan Paul van Hecke then fouled to concede a free kick to Mastouri at 50 minutes and 51 seconds. Tunisia won a corner at 52 minutes and 39 seconds, conceded by van Hecke.
Tunisia levelled the deficit at 53 minutes and 27 seconds when Hazem Mastouri headed home from the centre of the box, directing the ball into the bottom left corner from a Hannibal Mejbri cross that followed the earlier corner, making it Tunisia 1, Netherlands 2. A long stoppage, then Tunisia push for an equaliser
Play was held up before resuming again at 71 minutes and 27 seconds. Ryan Gravenberch fouled at 73 minutes and 12 seconds, giving Tunisia's Mortadha Ben Ouanes a free kick in a defensive area. Nathan Ake won a free kick in his own half at 78 minutes and 9 seconds after a foul by Tunisia's Haj Mahmoud, and Kluivert won another free kick on the left at 78 minutes and 43 seconds, again after a foul from Haj Mahmoud.
Nathan Ake headed over from the centre of the box at 79 minutes and 26 seconds, the chance created by a Jan Paul van Hecke headed pass. Tunisia's Firas Chaouat was flagged offside at 80 minutes and 52 seconds. With the match still live, Hannibal Mejbri won a free kick for Tunisia in his side's defensive half at 82 minutes and 34 seconds, with Netherlands still holding on to their 2-1 lead.
