Switzerland came through a tense FIFA World Cup knockout-round tie against Algeria with a 2-0 win, a result that sends the Swiss into the next round while bringing Algeria's run in the tournament to a close. Breel Embolo broke the deadlock early in the first half and Dan Ndoye doubled the lead moments into the second, but the scoreline only tells part of the story of a contest packed with goalkeeping heroics at both ends, a string of niggling fouls, two yellow cards, four separate injury stoppages and no fewer than nine substitutions across the two teams. In a knockout tie there is no second leg to fall back on, which made every one of those moments feel heightened, from Aouar's early miss to Kobel's smothered save and the search for a way back that Algeria mounted for the rest of the match.
Embolo Punishes Algeria Moments After Aouar's Miss
Both starting line-ups were confirmed well before kick-off, and once the warm-up drills were done, the two sides settled into what quickly became an open, attacking opening period. Algeria had the first genuine sight of goal in the 5th minute, timed at 5:12, when Houssem Aouar met a pass from Rafik Belghali and drove a right-footed effort from the centre of the penalty box, only to watch it drift wide of the left post.
That miss proved costly almost immediately. In the 10th minute, at 9:59, Breel Embolo raced onto a pass from Johan Manzambi during a rapid counterattack and finished first time with his left foot from close range, sending the ball into the middle of the goal to put Switzerland 1-0 up. The goal changed the tempo of the match, with Algeria forced to push men forward in search of an instant reply and Switzerland content to look for a second on the break.
Kobel and Zidane Trade Big Saves
Chances kept coming at both ends as the half wore on. Switzerland's Ricardo Rodriguez was penalised for a foul in the 12th minute, at 11:57, and Algeria's Riyad Mahrez used the free kick that followed to win another set piece out on the right wing. Two minutes later, at 13:39, goalkeeper Gregor Kobel produced the first big save of the afternoon, diving low to his left to keep out a right-footed effort from Houssem Aouar, taken from outside the box off a Farès Chaïbi assist, and preserve the one-goal lead.
Algeria's goalkeeper Luca Zidane matched him soon after. At 14:59, he sprang low to his right to deny Denis Zakaria, whose right-footed shot from the centre of the box, created by Remo Freuler, looked destined for the bottom corner until Zidane got across to smother it. Play was halted briefly at 15:23 after Johan Manzambi picked up an injury in the buildup, with the match resuming again at 16:34 once he was able to continue.
Algeria threatened again in the 18th minute, at 17:53, when Ibrahim Maza's right-footed effort from outside the box, set up by Rayan Ait-Nouri, was charged down and blocked by the Swiss defence before it could trouble Kobel.
A Half Turns Into a Stop-Start Affair
The next stretch of the half turned into a stop-start contest defined by fouls, free kicks and set pieces rather than clear chances. Johan Manzambi won a free kick in his own half at 20:51 after a foul by Ramiz Zerrouki, and Switzerland were awarded a corner at 21:38 after the ball went out off Rafik Belghali. Three minutes later, at 24:33, Ricardo Rodriguez tried his luck from distance, a left-footed shot from outside the box set up by Manuel Akanji, but it drifted just wide of the right post.
Shortly afterwards the referee paused the match for a scheduled drinks break, and once the players had taken on fluids, play resumed a few minutes later with both sides looking to regain their earlier intensity. Free kicks then came thick and fast in the middle of the half. Dan Ndoye won one in Switzerland's own half at 30:07 after Ait-Nouri fouled again, and Rafik Belghali won one for Algeria at 32:04 after Ruben Vargas was penalised. Ndoye won another free kick at 32:55, this time after a second Ait-Nouri foul in as many minutes, and at 34:11 a Remo Freuler foul handed Ait-Nouri a free kick in Algeria's own half, while at the same mark Johan Manzambi won one further forward, in the attacking half.
At 35:21, a foul by Farès Chaïbi cost Algeria a free kick, and barely a minute later, at 35:22, Chaïbi was shown a yellow card for the challenge, the first caution of the afternoon. Switzerland almost turned that setback for Algeria into a second goal soon after. At 36:33, Denis Zakaria met a Ruben Vargas cross delivered from a set piece with a firm header from the centre of the box that flew just over the crossbar.
More stoppages followed as the half moved into its final quarter. Nabil Bentaleb's foul at 37:32 gave Granit Xhaka a free kick in Switzerland's defensive half, while at 37:56 Houssem Aouar won one for Algeria after Dan Ndoye was penalised. Corners followed at both ends soon after: Switzerland won one at 38:59 when Aissa Mandi put the ball behind his own line, and Algeria got one back at 40:25 after Ricardo Rodriguez did the same at the other end of the pitch.
At 42:04, Riyad Mahrez won a free kick out on the right wing after a foul by Johan Manzambi. Moments later, at 42:21, Gregor Kobel produced arguably the save of the half, diving to his bottom left corner to keep out a right-footed shot from Farès Chaïbi, struck from the left side of the box off a Houssem Aouar assist.
Switzerland Take a 1-0 Lead Into the Interval
With four minutes of stoppage time signalled by the fourth official at 45:08, Algeria threw players forward in search of a leveller before the break. Ibrahim Maza came agonisingly close at 46:55, his left-footed shot from the centre of the box, set up by Aouar, drifting just wide of the right post. Maza was then caught offside at 47:37, and Riyad Mahrez suffered the same fate soon after, flagged at 47:35 as Algeria's search for an equaliser ran out of time. The referee blew for half-time in the 49th minute with Switzerland ahead 1-0, a slender but hard-earned lead built on Embolo's early strike and two smart saves by Kobel.
At the interval, the numbers told their own story: Switzerland had needed only one clean strike from Embolo to lead, while Kobel's two saves against Aouar and Chaïbi had kept Algeria's better spells from yielding anything, and Zidane's stop from Zakaria was the one moment that had kept the Algerians in the tie at all.
Ndoye Doubles Switzerland's Advantage
The second half kicked off with the score still 1-0, and Switzerland wasted little time adding to their tally. In the 46th minute, timed at 45:46, Dan Ndoye struck from the centre of the penalty box with his right foot, sending the ball into the bottom left corner to make it 2-0 and effectively double the mountain Algeria now had to climb.
Algeria searched for a way back into the contest almost straight away. At 49:11, Riyad Mahrez's left-footed effort from the centre of the box, teed up by Rafik Belghali, was blocked before it could test Kobel. Play was stopped again at 49:20 when Ibrahim Maza went down with an injury, and after treatment the match resumed at 50:26.
Cards, Chances and a Wave of Substitutions
Fouls continued to pile up after the restart. Ramiz Zerrouki's foul at 51:06 gave Granit Xhaka a free kick, and Nabil Bentaleb's foul at 54:10 handed one to Dan Ndoye. At 56:43, Ibrahim Maza fouled once more, and Xhaka won yet another free kick in Switzerland's defensive half.
Algeria made their first change of the match in the 58th minute, sending on Amine Gouiri in place of Ramiz Zerrouki, and followed it with a second substitution around 57:55, bringing on Jaouen Hadjam for Houssem Aouar. Switzerland, for their part, won a corner at 59:55 after Nabil Bentaleb put the ball out of play.
Chances kept coming as the hour mark passed. In the 64th minute, Switzerland earned another corner off a mistake by Aissa Mandi, and from the resulting Ruben Vargas cross, Nico Elvedi headed narrowly wide from close range, the Algeria defence somehow scrambling the danger away. Also at the 64-minute mark, Rafik Belghali won a free kick for Algeria in the defensive half after Ricardo Rodriguez was penalised. Play was paused for a second drinks break in the 66th minute as both sets of players took on fluids in the heat of the contest.
Substitutions then came thick and fast from the 70th minute onward. Switzerland took off Ruben Vargas for Fabian Rieder, and once play resumed after the change, they also replaced Johan Manzambi with Noah Okafor. Algeria matched the flurry of changes, withdrawing their most experienced attacking threat, Riyad Mahrez, for Anis Hadj Moussa, and separately bringing on Hicham Boudaoui in place of Nabil Bentaleb.
Granit Xhaka won a free kick in the defensive half at the 71-minute mark after a foul, and in the very same passage of play Hicham Boudaoui was shown a yellow card for a rough challenge, Algeria's second caution of the match. Xhaka then needed treatment for an injury in the 72nd minute, delaying proceedings briefly before the match resumed and both teams settled back into their rhythm.
Fabian Rieder tried his luck with a left-footed effort from the centre of the box in the 74th minute, but it was blocked before troubling Zidane. Algeria won a corner at 75 minutes after another Ricardo Rodriguez error, and Jaouen Hadjam fired a right-footed shot from outside the box off target in the 76th minute. At 77:07, Xhaka won another free kick in Switzerland's own half after Rafik Belghali was penalised for a foul.
Late Drama but No Way Back for Algeria
The closing stages produced several near misses at both ends as fatigue set in and both sides searched for a way to alter the scoreline. At 79:31, Breel Embolo, set up by Dan Ndoye, unleashed a powerful right-footed shot from outside the box that flew high and wide of the target. Fabian Rieder came agonisingly close at 80:48, his left-footed effort from the left side of the six-yard box, created by a Denis Zakaria cross, drifting just past the right post with the goal at his mercy.
Remo Freuler's foul at 80:55 gave Ibrahim Maza a free kick in the defensive half, and Algeria were forced into an injury-enforced substitution at 81:29, with Rafik Belghali making way for Adil Boulbina. At 82:45, Anis Hadj Moussa won a free kick for Algeria after Ricardo Rodriguez fouled him, and at almost the same moment, at 82:13, Switzerland substituted their goal-scorer Breel Embolo, sending on Zeki Amdouni in his place.
Denis Zakaria's injury stopped play at 84:28, forcing another delay. Zeki Amdouni was then penalised for a foul at 85:45, which gave Hicham Boudaoui a free kick in the defensive half, with play having resumed at 85:11 following the brief stoppage. Switzerland made two more changes late on: the injured Denis Zakaria was replaced by Silvan Widmer at 86:30, and moments later, at 86:32, Dan Ndoye gave way to Michel Aebischer. Algeria's Adil Boulbina was then flagged offside at 87:44 as his side pushed bodies forward in search of a way back into the tie.
Farès Chaïbi's foul at 89:49 conceded a free kick, which Zeki Amdouni won for Switzerland in the attacking half. The fourth official then signalled six minutes of stoppage time at 90:04, setting up a lengthy finish to the contest.
Ramy Bensebaini won a free kick for Algeria in their own half at 91:21 after Fabian Rieder was penalised for a foul. Zeki Amdouni won another free kick for Switzerland at 92:07, and in that same minute, Ibrahim Maza's left-footed shot from the left side of the box, set up by Adil Boulbina, was blocked, while Hicham Boudaoui was also penalised for a foul in the same passage of play.
Full Time: Switzerland 2, Algeria 0
Algeria pushed forward one final time in search of a consolation. Noah Okafor's right-footed effort from the left side of the box, assisted by Fabian Rieder, was blocked at 95:49, and moments later, at 95:51, Remo Freuler's right-footed attempt from the centre of the box was saved by Luca Zidane, who stood tall in the middle of his goal to keep the ball out. The referee brought the contest to a close at 96:02, confirming a 2-0 win for Switzerland over Algeria in this FIFA World Cup knockout tie, with Breel Embolo and Dan Ndoye the two scorers, Gregor Kobel and Luca Zidane the standout goalkeepers, and Farès Chaïbi and Hicham Boudaoui the two players cautioned across a match that swung between fine finishing, sharp goalkeeping and a long list of stoppages.
Across the second half, Algeria's changes were as much about chasing the game as managing fatigue, with Gouiri, Hadjam, Hadj Moussa, Boudaoui and Boulbina all introduced in an attempt to force something out of nothing against a Swiss side that was happy to sit in and pick off chances on the counter.
The 2-0 scoreline means Switzerland move on to the next stage of the tournament on the back of Embolo's early finish and Ndoye's early second-half strike, while Algeria, despite the efforts of Aouar, Mahrez, Maza and their five substitutes, head out of the competition at this knockout stage having found Kobel and the Swiss defence too difficult to break down a second time.
