India's expert tunnel extraction unit has made progress across two hydroelectric sites in flood-stricken Nepal, securing entry into a tunnel at Chilime and probing up to 185 metres at Langtang, according to India's envoy in Kathmandu. Nepalese authorities today issued a fresh alert regarding flood risks across eastern, central, and western districts, urging residents near rivers to remain vigilant and implement safety measures. There is a high likelihood of flash flooding in Nuwakot and Rasuwa districts, where water flow in smaller rivers and streams is projected to surge, according to an advisory from the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA). Additionally, river levels may rise with a moderate risk of flash floods across several eastern and central districts, including Taplejung, Sankhuwasabha, Solukhumbu, Khotang, Okhaldhunga, Ramechhap, Dolakha, Sindhupalchowk, Kavrepalanchok, Lalitpur, Bhaktapur, Kathmandu, and Dhading. In western Nepal, districts placed under advisory include Gorkha, Lamjung, Dolpa, Rukum East, Rukum West, Jajarkot, Darchula, Baitadi, Dadeldhura, Doti, Kailali, and Kanchanpur, stated the agency. The NDRRMA urged communities along riverbanks and vulnerable locations to stay cautious and follow necessary precautions given the forecast. - PTI

The death toll from Nepal's catastrophic flash flood climbed to 987 today as security teams recovered additional bodies across various regions, officials reported. Authorities estimate that 3,916 individuals, including 583 foreigners, remain untraced as search and rescue teams, including the Nepal Army, step up operations in impacted areas. According to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA), 321 bodies were retrieved from Chitwan, 216 from Nawalparasi East, 170 from Nawalparasi West, and 95 from Nuwakot. Similarly, 65 bodies were recovered from Gorkha, 55 from Dhading, 38 from Tanahun, and 27 from Rasuwa. The NDRRMA stated that eight districts have been affected by the flooding, adding that of the 279 people injured, 168 have been discharged from hospitals following treatment. - PTI

The Indian Embassy in Nepal today issued a detailed protocol for identifying and repatriating the mortal remains of foreign nationals, including Indians, killed in the devastating flash floods. The flash floods originating near the Nepal-Tibet border on August 26 swept across northern and central Nepal, causing hundreds of casualties, leaving thousands missing, and destroying homes, roads, bridges, and power infrastructure. Nepal's government has established a nine-step procedure for releasing the mortal remains of foreign citizens, covering documentation, photograph recording, autopsies, cause-of-death verification, and formal identification, the Embassy stated in a press release. The guidelines also encompass collecting fingerprints, DNA, and forensic samples, checking passports or identity documents, completing embassy or consular coordination, and issuing release memos and receipts, it added. - PTI

More than 11,000 individuals have been extracted from flood-hit regions in Nepal so far, with over 22,000 security personnel deployed for search and rescue efforts, officials reported today. As of yesterday, the death toll from the devastating floods stood at 939, with roughly 4,000 people still unaccounted for. At least 16 helicopters have also been deployed for search and rescue missions in affected zones, stated National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) spokesperson Shanti Mahat. - PTI

A massive glacier collapse caused floods and landslides across areas of Nepal and China, killing hundreds and leaving thousands missing. In Trishuli, local residents credit an educator with steering roughly 1,600 students to safety during the disaster.

Body number 1003 at a state-run hospital in Pokhara, Nepal, was claimed by three separate families, each believing they had identified a missing relative after the devastating floods. The relatives of Gopal Dahit, a hydropower worker from Bardiya, and Damodar Basyal, a tour guide from Rupandehi, were among the latest claimants. A third family had initially claimed the body on Sunday. Dahit and Basyal were still disputing ownership of the body on Monday, Nepal News reported, while the third family appeared to step back. The situation highlights the challenges facing families and officials as bodies recovered far downstream arrive at hospitals, where photographs, physical features, and personal belongings are being used to establish identities. The August 26 deluge killed hundreds. Body number 1003 lying in the Pokhara Academy of Health Sciences is one of them and must now undergo DNA testing. - PTI

Three of the six individuals from a village in Kushinagar, Uttar Pradesh, who went missing following the flash floods, have returned, while three others remain untraced, officials reported. Kaptanganj station officer Dhirendra Rai stated that these individuals from Sudhiyani village had travelled to work at a 216-megawatt hydroelectric project in the Trishuli area of Nepal's Rasuwa district, which was heavily impacted by the disaster. Three workers returned to their village on Monday, while three others remain missing, he added. - PTI

Following the sudden deluge in the Devighat region of Nepal's Nuwakot district, a local was seen sifting through the ruins of his ruined home to salvage personal items.

A 44-person emergency task force is being dispatched by South Korea to Nepal to assist local authorities with ongoing search and rescue efforts. An official statement from the foreign ministry noted that the dispatch comes in response to a formal plea from Nepalese authorities seeking international help for operations across affected zones. Comprising personnel from the ministry as well as the national fire service, the unit will depart for Nepal aboard a military transport plane on Tuesday, with plans to operate on the ground for roughly 10 days. -Reuters

Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that special train coaches along with essential support services have been organized to assist stranded travelers in reaching their respective home locations. "The Railway Board is actively collaborating with various railway zones, local district and state administrations, and the Ministry of External Affairs to guarantee the safe transit and homecoming of individuals impacted by the Nepal crisis," Mr. Vaishnaw noted. The railway network is partnering with multiple authorities to facilitate the movement of rescued flood survivors, delivering smooth transit options and safety for all affected passengers.

Altogether 158 Indian citizens have been rescued so far following the catastrophic flash floods in Nepal, according to an announcement by the Ministry of External Affairs on Monday, while India intensified its assistance operations alongside Nepalese officials. The official statement was conveyed by MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal via a post on social platform X. "A expert forensic unit from India maintained its operations in Kathmandu today alongside personnel from the Nepal Police Forensic Science Laboratory, focusing on standardizing protocols and record-keeping," the post stated. The Indian forensic specialists are assisting local authorities in analyzing DNA samples to help identify the remains of those who lost their lives in the disaster. -PTI

"The deluge along the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa district was far from a routine flooding event," stated Prime Minister Balendra Shah in an online message released late Monday evening. "It represents one of the major catastrophes in this belt, caused by a massive ice and snow avalanche in the higher Himalayas," he emphasized. "This event demonstrates that the threats encountering the mountain belt are escalating alongside global climate shifts," Mr. Shah further remarked. "Hence, the entire region needs to maintain high alertness." The Prime Minister emphasized that Nepal ought to present its situation forcefully on the world stage. "The moment has arrived for us to firmly highlight before global leaders the disasters we are enduring due to climate change," he stressed. -AFP
