In a bid to intimidate the family, the assailant climbed onto the roof of the residence, shouted verbal abuse, and fired a shot directly at his uncle-in-law. The target managed to escape unharmed, but the gunfire triggered widespread alarm in the locality, prompting an emergency police response.
Origins of the Family Conflict
The victim of the shooting attempt, Arvind Gurjar, a local agriculturalist, detailed the background of the dispute to law enforcement authorities. According to his account, the family arrangement stems from his deceased brother, Surendra Singh Gurjar. Arvind helped manage the marriage of his late brother's daughter, Roma, to Jogendra Singh Rana Gurjar, a resident of Purani Chhawani. The couple has two children together. However, the marriage was plagued by Jogendra's persistent alcohol addiction, which repeatedly led to instances of physical abuse against Roma. Unable to endure the ongoing mistreatment, Roma had moved out of her marital home with her two children and was residing at her family's house in Gram Soujana.
Refusal to Return and Escalation into Violence
The confrontation occurred on Thursday when Jogendra arrived at Gram Soujana demanding that Roma return with him to Purani Chhawani. Roma firmly rejected his demand due to his unaddressed alcoholism and abusive behavior. Enraged by her refusal, Jogendra produced a loaded country-made pistol and began screaming threats at the family members. He ascended to the roof of the home, continuing his barrage of abuses. Positioned on the elevated rooftop, Jogendra threatened to murder his uncle-in-law, Arvind Gurjar, and discharged a round toward him. Arvind miraculously avoided being struck by the projectile.
The Armed Rooftop Standoff
The sound of gunfire and prolonged shouting caused severe panic throughout Gram Soujana. As onlookers gathered, several local residents recorded videos of the armed man on the roof using their mobile phones, footage that subsequently circulated across social media platforms. Law enforcement officers recovered the firearm alongside two live cartridges from the scene before taking Jogendra into formal custody.
Formal Charges and Ongoing Police Investigation
Following the disarming and arrest of the suspect, police processed the formal complaint filed by Arvind Gurjar. Authorities registered a criminal case against Jogendra Singh Rana Gurjar under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), specifically Section 296 (b) concerning public obscenity, Section 351 (3) for criminal intimidation, and Section 110 relating to an attempt to commit culpable homicide. In addition, charges were invoked under Sections 25 and 27 of the Arms Act for illegal possession and usage of firearms.
