A dilapidated house collapsed onto a construction site in Balaghat, Madhya Pradesh, on Monday evening, burying three laborers under debris and leaving one of them critically injured. The accident took place on Ram Gali Road near the Balaghat district headquarters, where workers were carrying out basement work on a new building when the adjoining old house suddenly caved in. Police and local residents rushed to the spot and pulled all three workers out of the rubble before rushing them to the district hospital. One of the injured workers, identified as Manik, suffered the most serious injuries and has now been referred from the district hospital to Gondia for advanced treatment because of his critical condition.

An Old, Crumbling House Stood Right Next To The Construction Site

According to available details, businessman Dinesh Puglia, along with family members, has been constructing a new building with a basement behind the State Bank in Balaghat's Ramnagar area. Basement work on the building was underway when disaster struck. Right beside this under construction property stood an old kaccha house belonging to Rakesh Jain, which was already in a badly dilapidated state. On Monday evening around 5.30 pm, a wall of this old structure collapsed towards Dinesh Puglia's construction site, sending a large volume of debris and soil crashing straight into the basement. At the time, 14 laborers were working inside the basement, and three of them were caught in the falling debris and buried.

Three Workers Trapped Under Debris, One Left In Critical Condition

The three injured laborers have been identified as Manik Lodhi, Chetram Solkhe and Nilesh Nagpure. Chetram and Nilesh were pulled out of the debris in time and are currently admitted at the district hospital, where they are being treated. Manik, however, suffered the worst of the injuries, as he was almost completely buried under the mud and debris, with only his face visible above the rubble. Given the seriousness of his condition, he has been referred from the district hospital to a larger hospital in Gondia for better treatment. The prompt medical attention all three workers received right after the accident is believed to have prevented a far more serious outcome.

Loud Crash Brought Locals Running As Police Carried Out The Rescue

Eyewitnesses said the entire incident unfolded around 5.30 in the evening, while laborers were busy working on the basement of Dinesh Puglia's under construction building. The adjoining old wall gave way without warning, and the loud crash echoed through the surrounding neighborhood. Hearing the noise, nearby residents rushed to the spot within moments. As the trapped workers cried out for help, locals wasted no time in alerting the police and began clearing the debris themselves. Two of the workers were pulled free within minutes, but the third, Manik, was almost entirely buried in mud, with rescuers able to see only his face. He was extricated with great caution, after which all three injured laborers were rushed to the district hospital, from where Manik was later shifted to Gondia. Local residents worked hand in hand with the police throughout the rescue effort, clearing debris without pause so the trapped workers could be freed as quickly as possible.

What this means for you

The accident is a fresh reminder of the danger posed by crumbling structures standing right next to active construction sites.

  • Across India: The incident underlines why builders working near old, weakened houses in urban areas need to assess structural risk and put safety measures in place before digging basements or foundations.
  • In Balaghat: Residents in Ramnagar and nearby localities with dilapidated houses, or those living beside ongoing construction work, should get their structures inspected and take precautions before similar accidents occur.
