The scale of the alleged fraud points to a highly organized exploitation of a scheme specifically designed to feed the urban poor. Detailed scrutiny that surfaced around October 25, 2024, exposed a startling pattern where the exact same mobile numbers were registered repeatedly to claim subsidized food. In a span of merely three months, a single mobile contact was frequently entered into the system as many as 150 to 160 times. Expanding on this fraudulent pattern, data showed that upwards of 35,000 distinct phone numbers were recycled continuously across Bhopal to generate fake feeding logs. Over the course of twelve months, this systemic manipulation allowed fraudsters to falsely claim the distribution of roughly 59 lakh thalis. By logging these phantom meals, massive amounts of government subsidies intended for public welfare were wrongfully siphoned out of the state treasury.
Crucial Documents Disappear Amid Probe
The sheer volume of the irregularity prompted immediate intervention from the state government. The Urban Administration and Housing Department took cognizance of the massive discrepancy and ordered a comprehensive probe into the matter. To execute this audit, the department formally directed the Bhopal Municipal Corporation to hand over all foundational records, registration logs, and government grant files linked to the feeding scheme.
