New Leadership at NITI Aayog
The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet issued an official directive on Wednesday evening, confirming the central deputation of Anurag Jain. The senior Indian Administrative Service officer from the 1989 batch of the Madhya Pradesh cadre has been appointed as the new Chief Executive Officer of NITI Aayog. According to the government order, he will serve in this capacity for a period of two years starting from the date he assumes office. NITI Aayog functions as the premier public policy think tank of the central government, carrying the mandate to design strategic and long term development policies for the entire nation.
Jain's Tenure and Experience
Before this elevated central assignment, Anurag Jain was actively serving as the Chief Secretary of Madhya Pradesh. The state government had entrusted him with this top bureaucratic position on October 3, 2024. He was originally scheduled to retire in 2025 but received a one year service extension, which pushed his tenure to August 31, 2026. However, recognizing his extensive administrative expertise, the central government decided to bring him to New Delhi to helm the country's core policy institution.
Ashok Barnwal Steps Up in Madhya Pradesh
To fill the void left by Jain's departure, the General Administration Department of Madhya Pradesh quickly issued a transitional order. Ashok Barnwal, a seasoned IAS officer from the 1991 batch, has been appointed as the new acting Chief Secretary of the state. The administration granted him this temporary charge with immediate effect. He will oversee the state's bureaucratic machinery on an acting basis until further permanent orders are issued by the government.
Background and Portfolios of the Acting Chief Secretary
Hailing originally from Jharkhand, Ashok Barnwal brings a strong educational foundation to his administrative career. He holds a Bachelor of Technology degree in Mining Engineering, complemented by higher studies in Public Policy and Management. Prior to taking over the state's top post, he was already managing several highly crucial departments. He has been serving as the Additional Chief Secretary for the Public Health and Medical Education Department, as well as the Gas Tragedy Relief and Rehabilitation Department. Furthermore, Barnwal holds the additional responsibility of serving as the state's Commissioner of Food Safety.
