Historic Shift in Higher Education Documents
A significant transformation is taking place across higher education institutions in central India. In a major policy shift, several state and central universities in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh have decided to discontinue the use of the word "India" on their official credentials. From now on, students graduating from these institutions will find "Bharat" printed on their degrees and marksheets, replacing the conventional English name.
This transition will not remain confined to academic certificates alone. According to reports, the decision extends to university letterheads, official correspondences, invitation cards, and even campus signboards, establishing a uniform naming convention across all administrative levels.
Pioneering Change: Jabalpur's Rani Durgavati University Leads
The ground-level execution of this policy is set to begin in Jabalpur, Madhya Pradesh. Rani Durgavati University will become the first institution to award these newly designed certificates. The timing coincides with the university's upcoming convocation ceremony scheduled for this Sunday. President Droupadi Murmu will attend the event as the chief guest, where she will personally hand over the degrees bearing the name "Bharat" to the graduating students.
Vice Chancellor Explains the Historical Context
Rajesh Kumar Verma, the Vice Chancellor of Rani Durgavati University, shared the philosophy behind this institutional change. He emphasized that "Bharat" is the original and ancient identity of the nation, while the term "India" emerged much later in history. The university's Executive Council has officially approved a resolution to implement this change across all academic and administrative channels.
Verma highlighted that the country's ancient name deserves prominence in both Hindi and English documents. He pointed out that if the term "Bharat" can be proudly projected on the global stage during international events like the G-20 summit, educational institutions within the country should naturally embrace it as well.
Widespread Adoption Across Central Indian States
Following the initiative taken by Jabalpur's premier university, multiple other state and central universities in Madhya Pradesh and Chhattisgarh are preparing to implement similar changes. Consequently, lakhs of students across these two states will soon receive academic certificates reflecting this updated nomenclature. The decision has sparked widespread discussions among students and academic circles, with many viewing it as an effort to realign education with cultural heritage.
