Following the outcome of the recent legislative council elections, the Bharatiya Janata Party has launched a scathing attack on the opposition Congress. After Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah took to the social media platform X to post a sarcastic remark regarding the electoral setback. Highlighting the score, he wrote about how many seats out of 28 were won, pointing to zero, and further quipped that the ballot box should resign.
Amit Shah directed his remarks at the elections held across 28 legislative council seats where the grand old party faced a dismal performance. Voting for these seats took place in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Karnataka. A notable aspect of these particular contests was that they were conducted using traditional paper ballots rather than electronic voting machines.
Earlier, Prime Minister Narendra Modi also targeted the opposition party over the results. Sharing a post on the platform, he mentioned the elections held across the 28 council seats in Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Karnataka. The Prime Minister posed a public question regarding the exact number of seats the party managed to secure in these contests conducted via paper ballots.
Major Setback for Congress in Karnataka
Among all the regional outcomes, the party faced complete elimination across multiple fronts. In Karnataka, the party lost all four seats. The National Democratic Alliance secured victories across every single seat in the state legislative council results. Three sitting members were in the fray, and both incumbent BJP members successfully retained their positions. Meanwhile, the defeat of the deputy leader in the council and five-time member Puttanna dealt a severe blow to the organisation.
Polling for the 28 council seats across the four states took place on October 23. In Uttar Pradesh, voting was conducted for specific teacher and graduate constituencies. Similarly, separate segments in Bihar, Maharashtra, and Karnataka also underwent voting procedures.
Renewed Debate Over Paper Ballots
Opposition groups, including the Congress, have continuously advocated for replacing electronic voting machines with traditional paper ballots during general exercises. The opposition maintains that utilizing paper ballots could enhance public trust in democratic mechanisms. However, with the ruling party now mocking the opposition over its defeat in these ballot-led polls, the political debate has taken a new turn.
The election cycle featured several intense local battles. The BJP secured a victory in a tight contest in Gorakhpur, while the Samajwadi Party alleged irregularities and noted that even changing its candidate did not help. Conversely, the Samajwadi Party won both graduate and teacher seats in Varanasi following fierce competition.
