The decades-old, Rs 40,000 crore property dispute within the erstwhile Scindia royal family was on the verge of a final resolution, but a sudden legal objection has halted the process. Pratima Devi, a relative from the extended family, has intervened in the district court, demanding her rightful share just as the primary factions were ready to sign a settlement.
The Last-Minute Legal Hurdle
After years of complex litigation, the warring factions of the Scindia family had finally reached a consensus. Following multiple rounds of negotiations facilitated by mediators from both camps, a comprehensive partition formula was successfully drafted. To finalize this long-awaited agreement, both sides submitted applications for an urgent hearing in the district court. The matter was formally heard on July 20, and an end to the bitter feud seemed imminent.
However, this forward momentum was abruptly halted by the entry of Pratima Devi. She is the daughter of Padma Raje, who is the eldest aunt of Jyotiraditya Scindia. Pratima Devi filed a formal application in the court, asserting that the proposed settlement formula entirely overlooks her legitimate inheritance. She demanded that no final judgment be passed on the partition agreement until her objections are thoroughly evaluated. Acknowledging her plea, the district court has postponed the finalization of the settlement and scheduled the next hearing for July 28.
An Empire Spanning Across the Country
At the heart of this fierce familial legal battle is a massive real estate and financial empire estimated to be worth around Rs 40,000 crore. The Scindia family's assets are not confined to their traditional stronghold but are spread out across multiple major Indian cities.
In Gwalior, the properties include the grand Jai Vilas Palace, Usha Kiran Palace, Rani Mahal, Chhoti Vishranti, and Hiranyavan Kothi. The portfolio extends to other prominent cities in Madhya Pradesh, encompassing the Madhav Vilas Palace in Shivpuri, Happy Vilas in Indore, and the historic Kaliyadeh Palace in Ujjain. Beyond the state borders, the royal family owns Prabhat Vilas Palace in Pune, Scindia Villa and Gwalior House in Delhi, the prestigious Samudra Mahal in Mumbai, and the iconic Scindia Ghat in Varanasi.
Among these vast material assets, the most unique and priceless heritage item is a rare Shivling crafted entirely from emerald. This sacred artifact is considered the ultimate symbol of the Scindia dynasty's deep religious faith and royal identity. The disputed estate also encompasses several large trusts, substantial share investments, and various other high-value properties.
Decades of Court Battles
The seeds of this mammoth dispute were sown in 1988 following internal friction among the sisters of Madhavrao Scindia. The disagreements primarily involved Vasundhara Raje, Yashodhara Raje, and Usha Raje. As the rift deepened, the three sisters approached the judicial system to claim their respective shares of the ancestral wealth, thereby triggering a prolonged legal conflict.
Initially, the legal defense against these claims was spearheaded by Madhavrao Scindia himself. The battle continued for years without a clear resolution. Following Madhavrao Scindia's passing in 2001, the responsibility of the litigation fell upon the next generation. Jyotiraditya Scindia and his sister Chitrangada Raje were subsequently inducted as formal parties to the ongoing lawsuits.
Over the years, the single dispute multiplied into approximately a dozen pending cases spread across various courts. By 2017, the magnitude and complexity of the property matters escalated to the High Court level. It was only after this protracted struggle that both factions agreed to sit across the table with mediators, paving the way for the recent settlement draft that now faces a fresh legal challenge.
