A fresh political confrontation is brewing within the Maharashtra ruling coalition as power dynamics shift toward the cooperative sector. Even though the BJP and Shiv Sena are running the state government together as allies, the upcoming elections for the Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank are set to alter these equations entirely. While the BJP has traditionally held strong sway over this crucial cooperative body, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's faction is now stepping into the electoral fray, putting the two ruling allies on a direct collision course once again.
Shinde's Challenge to BJP's Stronghold
The Mumbai District Central Cooperative Bank (MDCCB), traditionally considered a stronghold of Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, is now facing a determined push from Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde's Shiv Sena. Buoyed by their recent electoral success in the Thane-Palghar district bank polls, the Shinde camp's confidence is running high. Under the leadership of MP Shrikant Shinde, the party is now planning to stake its claim on this influential financial institution in Mumbai, setting the stage for an intense political contest.
Current Board Dynamics and Direct Rivalry
At present, the 20-director board of the bank is overwhelmingly controlled by BJP MLA Pravin Darekar and his loyal supporters. The existing board also features prominent BJP figures like Prasad Lad and Tejasvi Ghosalkar, alongside rival Thackeray faction MLA Sunil Raut. The sudden entry of the Shinde faction poses a direct and formidable challenge to the BJP's long-standing dominance over the institution, signaling a fierce internal tussle within the ruling alliance.
The Significance of Cooperative Power and Middle-Class Voters
In Maharashtra politics, capturing control of cooperative banks goes far beyond mere financial administration, serving as a vital instrument for building grassroots political influence. Boasting a working capital of approximately 10,282 crore rupees, the Mumbai Central Cooperative Bank disburses between 600 crore and 700 crore rupees in home loans every single year. Furthermore, the bank handles extensive funding for government employee salaries, pensions, and housing society self-redevelopment projects. Gaining control over this institution provides direct access to Mumbai's influential and sizeable middle-class voter base.
Pre-Poll Maneuvering Ahead of Local Elections
Although Eknath Shinde and Devendra Fadnavis continue to govern the state in tandem at the apex level, this competitive streak has erupted right ahead of the crucial BMC and upcoming local body elections. Both allied parties are fiercely competing to consolidate their respective political and economic bases through dominance in the cooperative sector, showcasing the underlying friction as municipal polls approach.
