A bridge connecting Vasai East to Vadghar village in Maharashtra caved in suddenly on Saturday afternoon, trapping a heavy vehicle and a car in its collapsed section. The structure serves as the main link for several villages in the area, and it gave way without any prior warning while vehicles were still crossing it. No one was hurt in the mishap, but the collapse has completely cut off the main access road for villages including Vadghar, Kalbhon and Lendi, forcing residents to look for alternative ways to reach home.
How the collapse unfolded
The bridge came down at around 3 pm on Saturday. According to details, the structure linking Vasai East to Vadghar village suddenly crumbled, and a heavy vehicle and a four-wheeler that happened to be crossing it at the time got stuck in the collapsed portion. Locals and administration teams rushed to the spot as soon as word of the collapse spread. Fortunately, no casualties were reported, though given how busy this stretch usually is, the outcome could easily have been far worse. The collapse severed the direct link between Vasai East and the villages of Vadghar, Kalbhon and Lendi.
Overloaded heavy vehicles blamed for weakening the bridge
The bridge falls within the Medhe gram panchayat area and connects Medhe village to Vadghar, Kalbhon, Lendi and several smaller hamlets nearby. Besides the two-wheelers and four-wheelers used by local residents, the bridge sees heavy daily traffic of trucks hauling soil and murum out of minor mineral quarries in the area. Villagers allege that for some time now, these heavy vehicles have been carrying loads well beyond the bridge's capacity, and that this steadily weakened its structure. The daily strain of this overloaded traffic kept building pressure on the bridge until it finally gave way on Saturday.
Residents say their complaints went unheard
Locals in Vasai East say they were aware the bridge was deteriorating and had flagged it to the administration on multiple occasions, but no real action was ever taken. Villagers claim it was this administrative negligence, combined with the constant pressure from heavy vehicles, that ultimately led to the bridge giving way. Nandkumar Patil, a resident of Vadghar, said, "Heavy vehicles ply on this route every day, and that is what caused this bridge to collapse." He added that with the main route now shut, villagers must take a roughly 20-kilometre detour via the Ganeshpuri road just to reach their homes.
Daily life disrupted for villagers
With the bridge gone, residents of Vadghar, Kalbhon and Lendi now face a serious daily commuting challenge. Schoolchildren, patients heading to hospitals and people travelling to work all have to take the long way round via the Ganeshpuri road, which adds close to 20 kilometres to their journey. That means more time on the road and higher travel costs for everyone who depends on this route. Villagers are demanding that the administration quickly arrange an alternative crossing and speed up repair or reconstruction work on the bridge so that normal connectivity can be restored as soon as possible.
