Israel has formally recognized the remarkable bravery of Indian aviator Captain Smit Machhar, whose fearless actions during an in-flight crisis safeguarded hundreds of travelers. To communicate profound appreciation from both the government and citizens of Israel, the Consulate General of Israel in Mumbai launched a prominent public awareness initiative across key transit corridors. Under this drive, towering hoardings have been installed along major arterial roadways in the financial capital, offering gratitude to the pilot and wishing him a rapid and complete medical recovery.
Tribute Displays Across Key City Locations
The awareness displays have been erected at multiple strategic transit nodes across Mumbai to honor the captain. Key locations feature the intersection connecting Warden Road with Nepean Sea Road, a high-visibility point near the Prabodhankar Thackeray Flyover along the Western Express Highway in Bandra East, the BKC-Sion link corridor, the Andheri-Jogeshwari overpass, and the Tulsi Pipeline Road stretch situated close to Mahim. The text on these installations expresses heartfelt thanks to Captain Smit for preserving Israeli lives while extending sincere prayers for his convalescence.
Resilience Amid Severe Injuries
Consul General of Israel Yaniv Revach, who attended the installation along the Western Express Highway in Bandra, highlighted the extraordinary resolve displayed inside the cockpit. He noted that even after sustaining critical wounds across his neck and hands, Captain Smit successfully engaged emergency alerts and opened the cockpit entrance.
“Captain Smit has become a hero in both India and Israel.”
Yaniv Revach noted that the coordinated resolve of the captain, supported by four Israeli travelers present on the flight, prevented catastrophe and rescued 174 individuals aboard. The diplomat stated that immediate focus remains dedicated to the pilot regaining his health, after which Israel looks forward to hosting him as an official guest to bestow formal honors for his gallantry.
Parallels with 26/11 and Shared Humanitarian Ethos
Drawing historical parallels, the Consul General referenced the 26/11 Mumbai terror attacks, recalling how Indian nanny Sandra Samuel risked her life to rescue baby Moshe Holtzberg. He observed that both Indian and Jewish traditions place the highest spiritual and moral premium on protecting innocent human lives. The envoy cautioned that failure to access the cockpit could have triggered a disastrous scenario accompanied by complicated diplomatic fallout. He warned against unverified narratives circulated by certain media platforms, noting that reckless speculation risks straining mutual trust among partner nations including India, the UAE, and Israel. He additionally criticized Qatar and Al Jazeera for stoking public hostility toward Jewish people and Israel.
Cooperative Probe and Strengthening Ties
The UAE government has invited Israeli officials to participate in the ongoing inquiry into the airborne episode. The Consul General voiced confidence that a comprehensive probe will uncover the complete truth, adding that the involvement of an isolated lone attacker cannot be ruled out at this stage. He stressed that countering radicalization amplified via digital networks and mainstream channels demands robust bilateral cooperation. Concluding his remarks, the envoy shared that he personally visited Captain Smit's family members to convey prayers for his swift recovery, observing that the captain's valor has further cemented the enduring friendship connecting the people of India and Israel.
