A weekend excursion ended in profound grief along the scenic Konkan coastline when eight young boys drowned in the Arabian Sea at the renowned Diveagar beach in Raigad district. The victims, who had traveled from Alandi near Pune as part of a leisure trip, were caught unawares by deep undercurrents and sudden underwater drops while enjoying the waves. Despite a rapid recovery effort by coastal residents, none of the youngsters survived.
Picnic Organized by a Private Coaching Center
The excursion had been arranged by a private tutorial center named Winners, situated in Pune's Alandi locality. The group arrived at the popular beach destination to spend the day exploring the shoreline. While spending time along the coast, several youths ventured into the water to swim and splash in the surf. However, lacking adequate awareness of coastal shelf patterns and tidal strength, they unknowingly stepped into deep waters where the seabed plummeted abruptly, causing eight of them to be pulled under almost simultaneously.
Frantic Rescue Attempt by Local Water Sports Operators
When the youths began struggling in the swelling waves, alarm spread quickly across the crowded shore, triggering panic among visiting tourists and nearby residents. Observing the unfolding crisis, the owner and staff members of Bhau Maruti Salunkhe Mahakali Water Sports demonstrated extraordinary bravery, immediately diving into the turbulent sea alongside local village swimmers. The team initiated an intensive search operation across the surf zone and successfully retrieved all eight submerged boys from the water. Tragically, by the time they were brought ashore, massive water inhalation and suffocation had already claimed their lives.
Police Deployment and Legal Formalities Underway
Promptly after receiving alerts regarding the seaside calamity, Assistant Police Inspector Santosh Awati from the Dighi Sagari Borli Panchatan Police Station rushed to the scene accompanied by a police squad. The law enforcement officials took custody of the bodies with assistance from village volunteers and transferred them to the Primary Health Centre located at Borli Panchatan for mandatory autopsies and legal documentation. Police authorities have instituted a comprehensive inquiry to examine the incident, looking into organizational safety oversight and the sequence of events leading to the tragedy.
