Under this new directive, merchants engaged in the loose oil trade have been granted a one-year temporary exemption. Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis held a detailed meeting with a delegation of traders to address the ongoing concerns surrounding the trade and to discuss practical solutions for the community.
Legal framework and public interest
During the discussion, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis emphasized that regulations governing the sale of loose oil were enacted back in 2011, noting that the quality of food items remains a top priority for the administration. Consumer health and food safety continue to be non-negotiable pillars of state policy. However, the Chief Minister also acknowledged the ground reality that a vast number of economically weaker individuals still purchase loose oil for their daily needs, making it essential to balance strict legal enforcement with the livelihood concerns of traditional vendors.
Joint committee formation
To bridge the gap between regulatory compliance and commercial continuity, the state administration will establish a joint committee comprising Food and Drug Administration officials and representatives from the trading community. This committee will evaluate what operational changes traditional business owners need to implement in order to comply with existing laws. The government has also indicated that assistance will be provided to traders wherever necessary to help them navigate this transition smoothly.
Strict deadline for compliance
The relaxation granted by the administration is strictly temporary and limited to a duration of one year. The Chief Minister made it clear that the deadline will not be extended under any circumstances once the twelve-month period lapses. During this designated window, all traders are expected to restructure their operations in full compliance with the statutory rules.
