A tragic road accident occurred in the Malad West area of Mumbai, Maharashtra, on the night of 30 August. Around 8 PM, several vehicles were halted at the Mamledarwadi-S.V. Road junction traffic signal when a high-speed car crashed into them without warning. The impact killed 34-year-old Priyanka Satra on the spot, who was riding pillion on a motorcycle. Her husband and five others suffered severe injuries in the multi-vehicle collision, which was entirely captured on CCTV camera.
Car Loses Control at Malad Junction After Driver Hits Accelerator
According to the police, the car was being driven by 70-year-old Krishna Chamankar. While approaching the busy Mamledarwadi-S.V. Road junction signal where multiple vehicles had stopped, Chamankar intended to apply the brakes but accidentally stepped on the accelerator pedal instead. The sudden burst of speed propelled the vehicle forward into the waiting traffic.
The car struck the motorcycle carrying Priyanka Satra and her husband, who were returning home after purchasing vegetables. After hitting the motorcycle from behind, the runaway vehicle ploughed into three auto-rickshaws stationed at the intersection. Priyanka Satra succumbed to her injuries immediately at the scene, while her husband and five other individuals sustained serious injuries.
Driver Arrested and Granted Bail After Medical Tests Clear Alcohol Use
Following the collision, the Malad police arrived at the scene and took 70-year-old Krishna Chamankar into custody. Authorities registered a case against him for negligent and reckless driving. Medical examinations conducted by the police confirmed that Chamankar was not under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He was subsequently presented before a local court, which granted him bail.
Fatal Hit-and-Run in Nagpur During Early Morning Street Racing
In a separate incident in Maharashtra, an elderly pedestrian lost his life in Nagpur on Sunday morning, 30 August. The accident occurred around 5:30 AM on Japanese Garden Road in the Civil Lines locality. The victim, identified as Kailash Sondia, was out for his morning walk near Japanese Garden when a high-speed SUV struck him.
Eyewitnesses reported seeing three cars racing against each other at high speeds along the stretch just before the crash occurred. One of the competing SUVs slammed into Sondia, causing catastrophic head injuries. He was rushed to a nearby government hospital, where attending doctors pronounced him dead upon arrival. Nagpur police have detained three individuals, including the driver of the SUV involved in the fatal crash.
