To boost crop yield and economic returns for sugarcane growers across Uttar Pradesh, the UP Sugarcane Research Council is holding a specialized Kisan Mela at its Shahjahanpur headquarters on Friday, October 30. The core objective of this event is to provide verified, high-yielding planting material directly to farmers in a seamless manner. The research council recently released two high-performing early-maturing sugarcane varieties, generating widespread enthusiasm among growers. To ensure that these scarce early-stage seeds reach genuine farmers without arbitrary allocation or procedural delays, the council has integrated digital pre-booking with an in-person distribution fair.
Newly Released Sugarcane Varieties and Seed Supply Limits
Senior Scientist Dr. Gorakhnath Gupta from the UP Sugarcane Research Council explained that the newly introduced early sugarcane varieties have been designated as Co.S. 23232 and Co.S. 19231. Both varieties are designed to offer superior cane tonnage and improved sugar recovery rates. However, during the initial release phase of any newly developed agricultural strain, certified seed material remains available in limited quantities. Meeting the immediate demand of all growers simultaneously with bulk supplies is technically impossible during early propagation. To maintain complete transparency and prevent hoarding, the council implemented a regulated online booking system before distributing physical seed kits.
Online Booking Framework and Sugar Mill Quota Eligibility
Traditional seed distribution methods frequently failed to deliver newly developed strains to actual field cultivators on schedule. To eliminate these bottlenecks, the council digitized its allocation system, limiting eligibility exclusively to farmers holding valid quota registration (satta) with regional sugar mills. The online booking window opened on October 9. For this drive, the council set aside 200,000 buds of the Co.S. 23232 variety and 100,000 buds of the Co.S. 19231 variety. Each registered farmer was permitted to reserve a single mini kit containing up to 100 buds. Within this structured allocation, approximately 30,000 farmers successfully placed their bookings.
Collection Protocol and Verification Steps at the October 30 Event
Farmers who completed their digital reservations on October 9 are instructed to attend the Kisan Mela in Shahjahanpur on Friday, October 30, to collect their mini seed kits. To avoid overcrowding and facilitate orderly processing, attendees must arrive at the venue by 9:00 AM. Upon arrival, farmers will report to the primary registration desk and present the unique application number transmitted to their registered mobile phones at the time of booking. Additionally, farmers must produce their Aadhaar card to establish identity and verify matching records. Once identity verification is completed, an official token will be issued, enabling the holder to collect their designated seed kit directly from the distribution counter.
