Manipur Director General of Police Mukesh Singh visited Kamjong district on Wednesday to review the prevailing security situation and strengthen operational coordination among the security forces deployed in the region. He was accompanied by the Additional Director General of Police for Law and Order and the Deputy Inspector General of the BSF SHQ Manipur during the visit.
Coordination Meetings With Security Forces
During the visit, the DGP and senior police officials interacted directly with district police personnel to discuss the ground-level law and order scenario. The leadership later convened a joint security coordination meeting with representatives from 11 Assam Rifles and the Border Security Force. This session aimed to evaluate ongoing security challenges and improve tactical coordination between the various forces operating in the area.
Interactions With Civil Society Groups
The police delegation also met with representatives of local Kuki and Naga civil society organisations. Officials listened carefully to the grievances and concerns raised by community members regarding the ongoing tensions in the district. The police leadership assured all participating representatives of comprehensive support and proactive assistance aimed at restoring lasting peace and normalcy across Kamjong.
Renewed Arson and Violence in the District
This high-level security visit took place against the backdrop of renewed violence in the district, where unidentified militants allegedly set multiple houses on fire in Khoikai Kuki village early in the morning. The latest bout of arson has further heightened anxiety among residents, prompting the state police administration to step up its supervisory presence and strategic response.
Previous Attacks and Displacement
The ongoing unrest follows a series of violent incidents from the previous week, when suspected militants raided Chassad, a Kuki hill village, and torched at least 15 houses. That destructive raid forced a significant number of villagers to flee their homes and seek temporary refuge in nearby forests and a local Army camp.
Casualties From Armed Clashes
The arson attack last week was preceded by a daytime assault on the same village, during which armed individuals opened indiscriminate fire. That shooting resulted in the death of one Kuki civilian and left four other individuals with serious bullet injuries, compounding the urgency of the security review conducted by the state police chief.
