Security agencies in Manipur executed two distinct operations in Kamjong and Kakching districts, resulting in the confiscation of illegal country-made liquor and the apprehending of an active member associated with a banned militant group alongside his associate.
Illicit Liquor Intercepted Near International Border
Acting on specific intelligence supplied by local Naga women's groups, personnel from the Chassad Police Station carried out targeted vehicle checkings in the border district of Kamjong on August 30. The district shares an international frontier with Myanmar, making it a sensitive corridor for unauthorized movement. During the routine inspection, police officers intercepted a Tata truck. A search of the vehicle led to the discovery and seizure of 30 litres of illicit distilled indigenous country (DIC) liquor.
The truck driver was immediately taken into custody. Authorities identified the suspect as 45-year-old Rafikuddin, son of Habibur Rahman, residing in Kanakpur Part-I in the Binnakandi area of Assam's Cachar district. Following the confiscation, police personnel teamed up with local women near the gate of the Chassad Police Station to publicly destroy the seized liquor, highlighting ongoing efforts to curb illegal alcohol trafficking in the region. Legal proceedings have been launched against the driver, and further investigation is under way to trace the origin and destination of the contraband stock. The enforcement action was also shared in a statement by Manipur Police.
Militant Cadre and Accomplice Apprehended in Kakching
In a separate joint operation conducted on August 29, a combined force comprising the Kakching Commando (CDO) Unit and the 46 Assam Rifles carried out raids in Kakching district. The joint team targeted locations tied to extortion activities and successfully arrested two individuals, including an active cadre of the banned insurgent group Kanglei Yawol Kanna Lup (KYKL).
The arrested KYKL cadre was identified as 26-year-old Yumnam Rohenjit Meitei, also known as Akui, son of Yumnam Ibomcha Meitei. Security personnel apprehended him directly from his residence in Langmeidong Maning Mayai Leikai. Concurrently, security forces arrested his alleged associate, 26-year-old Shakachand Yumnam, also known as Chand, son of Yumnam Ibobi Singh, from his residence in Langmeidong Mamang Leikai. Officials stated that Shakachand was actively assisting the insurgent cadre in executing extortion demands in the area.
Ammunition and Tactical Gear Recovered
During the search operations at the suspects' premises, security forces recovered a significant cache of arms components and tactical equipment. The seized items included two empty INSAS rifle magazines along with 27 live rounds of INSAS ammunition. Additionally, security personnel seized a BAOFENG wireless communication handset, two weapon slings, a bulletproof jacket fitted with a protection plate, tactical boots, and a magazine pouch.
Investigating officers are currently questioning both suspects to establish their wider involvement in extortion rackets, logistics support, and other illegal operations linked to the outlawed KYKL outfit in Manipur.
