Currency markets shifted momentum as the Euro found fresh footing against the US Dollar following softer economic data out of the United States. A lower-than-anticipated consumer inflation gauge pushed investors to reduce their exposure to the Greenback, dampening speculation that the Federal Reserve will implement an interest-rate increase in October. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which gauges the American currency against a basket of six leading international currencies, slipped to trade near 101.20 after climbing to a two-month peak of 101.61 on Tuesday.
Muted PCE Inflation Reshapes Monetary Policy Outlook
The August core Personal Consumption Expenditures (PCE) Price Index registered a month-on-month advance of 0.2 percent, falling short of the consensus projection of 0.3 percent. Headline PCE inflation rose 0.3 percent over the same period, also missing expectations of a 0.4 percent increase. On an annualized metric, core inflation stood steady at 3.0 percent while headline inflation reached 3.4 percent, with both readings landing below market projections.
These figures triggered an immediate repricing across interest rate futures. Data tracked by the CME FedWatch Tool showed the probability of an interest rate increase by the US central bank in October retreating to approximately 37 percent. This represents a significant pullback compared to the 70 percent probability priced in earlier in the week, easing interest-rate support for the US Dollar across key currency crosses.
Resilient GDP Revision and Labor Additions Cushion Dollar Loss
Despite the cooling inflation trajectory, broader economic releases highlighted underlying durability in the US domestic landscape, preventing a deeper downturn in the Greenback. Second-quarter Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth was adjusted upward to an annualized clip of 2.2 percent, sharply higher than the previous estimate of 1.5 percent. Solid household spending and resilient corporate capital investments underpinned the revised economic output.
Complementing the growth numbers, the ADP Employment Change print revealed that private employers added 90K jobs during September. The figure outpaced the 70K forecast and accelerated well beyond the 36K payroll additions reported in the preceding period. This combination of sturdy hiring and upgraded output limited broader dollar declines by signaling that economic activity remains resilient.
Euro Valuation Context and Pressure Points
In the broader foreign exchange sphere, EUR/USD recently faced persistent downside, drifting to its lowest valuation point since May 2025. The currency pair traded down to 1.1312 on Wednesday, remaining substantially below its January high of 1.2082. That structural downtrend has been driven by prolonged Dollar strength, international political instability, and persistent economic vulnerabilities regarding Europe's reliance on high-cost energy supplies. However, potential consumer price shocks within the Eurozone could offer the single currency temporary stabilization.
Pacific and Asian Currencies React to Divergent Signals
Across the Asian trading window on Wednesday, other major currency pairs reflected shifting local drivers. AUD/USD touched two-month lows near 0.6950 after August underlying CPI in Australia missed expectations, curtailing market bets on further policy tightening by the Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA). Soft Chinese PMI metrics also kept the Australian Dollar subdued despite the US Dollar pausing its broader upward track.
Concurrently, USD/JPY sustained losses below the 157.00 threshold during Wednesday's Asian session. A more hawkish stance from the Bank of Japan (BoJ) alongside ongoing risks of direct currency intervention provided support to the Japanese Yen, offsetting downbeat domestic retail sales and factory output data while benefiting from the Dollar's slight retreat.
Precious Metals and Digital Assets Trade Rangebound
In commodity and alternative asset markets, gold climbed to touch $4,220 early in the American session following the release of the cooled inflation figures. The shrinking probability of an October Fed rate hike supported the initial rally, but stronger US employment and growth revisions quickly sapped momentum, leaving gold trading flat around $4,180.
Cryptocurrency benchmarks also displayed muted trading behavior on Wednesday. Bitcoin participants sought to preserve short-term support around the $83,000 threshold. Ethereum tracked parallel price swings, lingering beneath $2,700 on the topside and holding above $2,600 on the downside. Ripple traded in tight proximity to $1.50 as speculative investors awaited clearer directional triggers from central bank policies.
