The EUR/USD currency pair staged a modest rebound during Asian trading hours on Monday, edging higher toward 1.1208. The shared European currency found brief respite after Moscow and Kyiv announced an agreement halting strikes on energy infrastructure, a move that softened crude oil values and lifted some of the immediate economic pressure across Europe. Nevertheless, ongoing fiscal concerns in France continue to cast a cloud over the single currency, limiting any broader enthusiasm among Euro buyers.
Concurrently, the US Dollar commenced the trading week on a measured and defensive footing ahead of the pivotal September US Consumer Price Index (CPI) report scheduled for Wednesday. The US Dollar Index (DXY), which tracks the Greenback against a basket of six major peers, moved quietly around the 102.20 threshold, reflecting widespread institutional reluctance to take heavy directional bets ahead of critical macro figures.
Inflation Expectations and Federal Reserve Policy Path
The impending inflation numbers are poised to heavily shape pricing around upcoming interest rate decisions by the Federal Reserve. Minutes from the Federal Open Market Committee's (FOMC) September policy meeting, revealed late last week, emphasized that central bank officials remain deeply troubled by inflation continuing to hold uncomfortably above the mandatory 2% annual goal.
Under its dual statutory mandate, the Federal Reserve must balance maximum sustainable employment with long-term price stability. Ever since the global disruption of the pandemic, maintaining inflation near 2% year-over-year has evolved into the central bank's most demanding challenge. Ongoing bottlenecks and logistics strains have kept consumer price pressures elevated near multi-decade peaks. Having already enacted tightening measures, monetary authorities are widely projected to keep policy restrictive over the observable horizon.
EUR/USD Technical Landscape and Decisive Price Thresholds
Despite Monday's marginal gains, the primary downtrend remains firmly entrenched across daily timeframes. The 14-period Relative Strength Index (RSI) stood around 27 in recent trading, signaling deeply oversold market momentum, with live technical readings placing the 14-period RSI at 23. While such deeply stretched levels frequently suggest downside exhaustion, sellers retain control as long as spot values remain capped beneath daily Exponential Moving Averages (EMAs).
On any upward retracement, initial technical overhead emerges at the 20-day EMA near 1.1330. Bullish traders would need to secure a daily close above this barrier to neutralize selling momentum and validate a broader correction. Conversely, failure to defend the one-year trough at 1.1161 risks triggering a fresh wave of aggressive downside extension. Current live indicator levels reveal the 20-day EMA at 1.13, the 50-day EMA at 1.14, and the 200-day EMA at 1.16, alongside Bollinger Bands spanning 1.11 to 1.16, corroborating a sustained structural downtrend.
Price Action Across Major Currencies
Currency markets displayed notable dispersion across other major pairs during the Asian session. AUD/USD managed to close an early bearish gap but remained pinned beneath 0.7000 amid subdued liquidity resulting from regional bank holidays. Even as US sovereign bond yields retreated from multi-year peaks, the US Dollar staged recovery attempts, keeping the Australian currency checked alongside fading probabilities of an additional Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) rate hike in November.
Meanwhile, USD/JPY prolonged its narrow consolidation, hovering comfortably above 158.00. Market participants stayed vigilant regarding potential official intervention from Tokyo authorities aiming to stem Yen depreciation. Moderating US Treasury yields curbed the pair's ceiling, though prevailing geopolitical risks provided an underlying floor under the safe-haven Greenback amid sparse trading volume in Japan and the US.
Precious Metals, Crypto Derivatives, and the Indian Rupee
Commodities and digital assets also reflected shifting speculative flows. Spot Gold attempted to consolidate above $4,200, extending its recovery from a two-month nadir of $4,067 as the US Dollar's retreat from an 18-month summit took a pause.
In digital assets, Cardano (ADA) recaptured ground above its crucial technical support following a 2.85% pullback last week. Derivative positioning pointed to improving risk appetite, with CoinGlass reporting a long-to-short ratio of 1.01 for ADA on Monday, crossing back into bullish territory.
In Asian emerging markets, the Indian Rupee (INR) opened with decisive strength against the US Dollar. The USD/INR exchange rate sank 1% to around 95.80 after fresh regulatory actions by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) aimed at dampening Dollar demand provided strong relief to the domestic currency.
