Ahead of this Wednesday's monetary policy announcement from the US Federal Reserve, pressure on precious metals intensified as demand for the US Dollar surged. The expectation that the central bank might hike interest rates, combined with elevated energy prices, weighed heavily on bullion, causing gold to drop below the key $4,300 mark on Monday. Driven by the repricing of monetary tightening, systematic trend followers known as Commodity Trading Advisors (CTAs) emerged as large-scale sellers in the complex, liquidating nearly half of their existing net-long positioning.
Systematic Liquidation Balanced by Discretionary Inflows
Despite the notable unwind by quantitative funds, market strategists anticipate that the broader fallout from this automated selling will remain relatively modest. Structural drivers continue to provide a firm foundation beneath the market. Chief among these supports are the resurfacing theme of dollar debasement, persistent high-volume bullion acquisitions by global central banks, and a resumption of accumulation within gold-backed ETFs. Together, these factors offer a resilient base for longer-term discretionary capital flows. Consequently, any short-term weakness across the yellow metal is increasingly viewed by analysts as an attractive entry point for buyers looking to build exposure on dips.
Foreign Exchange Moves Ahead of Central Bank Decisions
The greenback's resilience generated cross-asset ripples across foreign exchange trading on Monday. The AUD/USD currency pair slipped to around the 0.7140 area during the Asian trading session, hitting a one-and-a-half-week trough. Although the downward momentum failed to sustain an aggressive follow-through, spot prices lingered just north of the mid-0.7100s, down approximately 0.25% on the session.
Concurrently, the USD/JPY pair found fresh buying interest as the trading week opened. Moving toward the 154.00 handle in Asian trading, the pair recouped a portion of the decline recorded on Friday. However, spot prices remained confined within the tighter range that has persisted over the past week or so, hovering close to the nearly seven-month low established on the preceding Tuesday as currency participants positioned themselves ahead of a pivotal slate of central bank events.
Cryptocurrency Markets Demonstrate Resilience
In contrast to the retreat in gold, digital assets registered positive momentum across the board on Monday. Bitcoin traded higher to sit near the $77,884 level, mirroring a wider risk-tolerant tone evident throughout the digital currency space. Key alternative assets mirrored Bitcoin's neutral-to-bullish posture. Ethereum maintained its footing above a primary support benchmark at $2,521, while Ripple similarly defended its critical technical floor around $1.38.
Inflation Data and the Fed Policy Outlook
The latest surge in rate hike expectations gathered steam following the release of recent US PPI and CPI inflation reports. Market participants now view the Federal Reserve's updated dot plot projection as the critical catalyst that will determine whether the US Dollar can sustain its upward trajectory. In addition, the perceived policy independence of Warsh confronts a notable test against the backdrop of pressure from Donald Trump advocating for lower borrowing costs. For the greenback to extend its current advance, the Federal Reserve will ultimately need to validate the aggressive hawkish expectations currently priced into the financial system.
