Indian equity benchmark indices initiated the trading session on 21 August on a positive note despite mixed global market signals. In the opening session, the domestic stock market oscillated in the green, with the flagship Nifty 50 index edging extremely close to its key psychological milestone of 24,250. Buyers maintained an upper hand across Dalal Street during the early hours, lending support to both benchmark indices.
Sensex and Nifty Opening Performance
At the opening bell, the BSE Sensex advanced by 54.45 points to register at 77,592.17. Simultaneously, the NSE Nifty 50 gained 17.10 points to open at 24,248.95. Market breadth remained firmly encouraging, as approximately 1,520 stocks recorded gains compared to 820 declining shares, while 182 equities remained unchanged in early trade.
Top 5 Heavyweights Driving Market Rally
The positive momentum on the Nifty index was anchored primarily by five major heavyweights, including Kotak Mahindra Bank, Mahindra & Mahindra, Eicher Motors, Eternal, and Sun Pharma. The Sensex heatmap reflected noticeable buying interest, led by Eternal which rose 0.87 percent. It was closely followed by Tech Mahindra gaining 0.41 percent, BEL moving up 0.35 percent, Tata Steel advancing 0.30 percent, and SBI climbing 0.25 percent. Additionally, HDFC Bank, Power Grid, and ICICI Bank also traded with solid gains.
Stocks Facing Profit Booking and Selling Pressure
Conversely, select stocks experienced downside pressure during the session. Shares of JSW Steel, Grasim, TCS, Infosys, and HDFC Life encountered noticeable selling sentiment. Heavyweight counters within the IT and FMCG spaces witnessed targeted profit booking, causing TCS to decline by 0.91 percent, IndiGo to shed 0.63 percent, and HCL Tech to drop 0.60 percent.
Nifty 50 Top Gainers and Top Losers Breakdown
Looking at individual stock performances on the Nifty 50 index, Eternal emerged as the top gainer with a rise of 0.75 percent. Hindalco followed with a 0.5 percent climb, Kotak Mahindra rose 0.49 percent, HDFC Bank gained 0.48 percent, and Tata Steel surged 0.44 percent. On the loser side, TCS led the decline with a drop of 1.33 percent. Other notable laggards included Grasim falling 0.85 percent, InterGlobe Aviation slipping 0.84 percent, Apollo Hospital dropping 0.76 percent, and Bajaj Auto sliding 0.66 percent.
Sectoral Index Trends Across Markets
Sectoral performance displayed a divided picture across different asset segments. Among the gaining sectors, Nifty Realty outperformed the market with a strong surge of 0.7 percent. Other advancing sectors included Nifty Pharma gaining 0.24 percent, Nifty PSE up 0.23 percent, Nifty Bank strengthening 0.11 percent, and Nifty Energy adding 0.11 percent. On the declining front, Nifty IT was the most severely impacted sector, falling 0.68 percent due to widespread selling in tech shares. Additionally, Nifty FMCG slipped 0.2 percent, Nifty MNC shed 0.11 percent, and Nifty Infra eased by 0.06 percent.
