The state government of Tripura has approved a series of developmental and security initiatives during a Cabinet meeting chaired by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday. Announcing the decisions at a press briefing, Cabinet Minister Sushanta Chowdhury highlighted that the measures focus heavily on strengthening law enforcement, creating new employment opportunities, and broadening the scope of higher education across the region.
Expanding Railway Law Enforcement
To bolster security arrangements for train passengers across the state, the Cabinet has sanctioned the establishment of four new Government Railway Police Stations (GRPS). These new security stations will be located in Bishramganj, Udaipur, Belonia, and Sabroom. At present, Tripura relies on a network of 10 operational GRPS units to secure its rail network, and the addition of four more units will significantly extend safety coverage.
To ensure these upcoming police stations function effectively, the government approved 105 dedicated posts across multiple ranks. The newly sanctioned cadre includes 3 Sub-Inspectors, 11 women Sub-Inspectors, 9 Assistant Sub-Inspectors, 21 women Head Constables, 56 women Constables, and 5 Constable Drivers, ensuring strong female representation within the railway security apparatus.
Major Recruitment Push in Home Department
Alongside the infrastructure rollout for railway policing, the Cabinet gave its clearance for direct recruitment under the Home Department. A total of 916 police constables, comprising both male and female candidates, will be inducted to reinforce law enforcement services state-wide.
New Multi-Disciplinary University in Sepahijala
The Cabinet also greenlit a proposal to set up a full-fledged university at Bishalgarh, situated in Sepahijala district. This upcoming higher education institute will provide academic qualifications ranging from certificate, diploma, and postgraduate diploma courses to undergraduate, postgraduate, M Phil, PhD, and post-doctoral research programmes. It will also hold the authority to confer honorary degrees such as D Litt and D Sc.
Students at the Bishalgarh institution will have access to a wide array of educational disciplines. The university plans to deliver courses covering science, engineering and technology, architecture and planning, social sciences and humanities, commerce and management, along with specialized medical systems such as AYUSH, yoga, naturopathy, and medical sciences.
Boosting Academic and Administrative Staffing
In addition to policing and university setup, the government sanctioned 305 new posts across various state departments. This recruitment effort places a strong focus on academic staffing, incorporating 200 posts specifically dedicated to Assistant Professors to improve educational standards across government institutions.
