Political friction has intensified in Meghalaya over the governance and policy directives of the state education department. Regional political organization Voice of the People Party (VPP) has officially pressed for the immediate removal of Vijay Kumar Mantri from his post as Commissioner and Secretary of Meghalaya’s Education Department. The party contends that recent regulatory changes and administrative measures have generated widespread ambiguity among teaching staff while raising serious questions regarding the standards and reach of schooling across the state.
Key Grievances Regarding Teacher Welfare and Policy Implementation
Critiquing the management of the department, VPP chief Ardent Miller Basaiawmoit stated that the recent implementation of educational guidelines demonstrates a disregard for local educators. Specific concerns highlighted by the party involve the structured pay framework, service stipulations, and the general welfare of educators employed across deficit grant-in-aid institutions. Furthermore, the ongoing school rationalization process has drawn sharp criticism, with the VPP characterizing these administrative actions as insensitive and misaligned with the priorities of regional communities.
Critique of Bureaucratic Efficiency Over Ground Realities
Emphasizing the distinct characteristics of the state, Basaiawmoit observed that an educational framework cannot function solely on bureaucratic logic or numerical metrics. He asserted that decision-makers must account for the unique geographical and social conditions governing Meghalaya rather than relying strictly on administrative convenience. According to the party, prioritizing statistical rationalization over practical realities threatens to undermine both educational quality and equitable access for students in remote areas.
Demand for Responsive Departmental Leadership
To address the prevailing uncertainty, the Voice of the People Party has called for an immediate overhaul in the leadership of the Education Department. The organization stressed the necessity for administrative heads who engage constructively with teaching staff and adapt policies to suit local needs. In his statement, Basaiawmoit remarked, “We need leadership that listens to teachers, respects local realities and places the interests of students and the people of Meghalaya above bureaucratic convenience.” Consequently, the VPP reiterated its mandate for Mantri's immediate replacement with leadership capable of aligning policy execution with the broader public interest.
