The broader objective is to give local craftspeople and weavers direct commercial access to international markets while strictly safeguarding the distinct cultural heritage of their work, according to Union Minister of State for External Affairs and Textiles Pabitra Margherita.
Global Market Reach for GI Tagged Eri Silk
Margherita pointed out that specialized measures are being introduced to link local creators, notably those producing the state's Geographical Indication (GI)-tagged Eri silk, directly with overseas consumers. Meghalaya preserves an enduring tradition of silk rearing and handloom weaving, with grassroots communities playing an essential role in sustaining the production of authentic Eri silk across generations.
Subsidised Yarn and Skill Upgradation for Weavers
The Ministry of Textiles is extending targeted assistance to empower the craft community through diverse development schemes. Dedicated training programmes are being run to refine artisan skills and introduce advanced techniques. Alongside capability building, the government is ensuring the regular supply of yarn to weavers at subsidised prices, helping manage raw material expenses.
Leveraging E-Commerce and Export Promotion Channels
To ensure that Meghalaya's traditional creations reach overseas buyers seamlessly, the government is exploring established e-commerce avenues and export promotion channels. These digital and trade pipelines will allow artisans to bypass traditional marketing barriers, significantly expanding their commercial presence without diluting the indigenous cultural identity rooted in their craft.
Rising Inflow of International Tourists on the Horizon
Beyond handlooms, the Union minister underscored the immense potential residing within the state's travel sector. Margherita stated that international visitor arrivals to Meghalaya are expected to grow substantially in the coming years. This expected rise in tourism aligns closely with broader efforts to elevate the visibility of the state's heritage, artistic traditions, and scenic appeal far beyond domestic borders.
